xbox has lost out to ps2 all around the world..although its console is superior it flopped everywhere except US.the sales of xbox surpassed that of ps2 only during the month of april(2002) its been battered heavily after that. http://forum.pcvsconsole.com/viewthread.php?tid=14263 now we all know according to some valid sources that ps3 would have a much powerful engine than xbox2....microsoft is very much in the back foot...but the risk lies whether it could even go bankrupt this time!!!!!i firmly believe they should have never challenged the japanese counterparts in the gaming business.i have an xbox myself but i am not satisfied and cognitive dissonance lead to the downfall of most US companies...whether microsoft meets the same fate?.....is indeed a question to be asked?
lmao I really don't want to be rude but, nevermind. ITS MICROSOFT YOU IDIOT! OF COURSE XBOX WON'T MAKE THEM GO BANKRUPT. Now I don't know if you are a Ps2 fanboy, but sales for Xbox could complpetely discontinue and Microsoft would still be okay. (I don't know if you know, but they also sell computers as a little side job.) Also, whos informing you at Ps3 will have a superior engine? I think you might be wrong there. It may be important to point out that Xbox biggest games, Halo 1-2, are bot phenominal sellers. Teasers and info about Xbox 2 and Ps3 lead me to believe that their isn't much difference between the two, except maybe that whole idea for Xbox 2 they are discussing where gamers of the box can play online with computer counterparts. I don't know, do a little more homework and your opinion might change.
my friend these are the figures in USA for the month of january.....remember what happened to zenith, ford, and big american companies they suffered from marketing myopia and they perished.the ps3 comes with a processor that is completely new and robust...if sony starts to istall these chips in desktop pcs wht wd happen to amd and intel...i am an us fan...and i have both ps2 and xbox.just compare the selling figures of ps2 with that of xbox.xbox 1 and 2 projects comprise of billions of dollars for microsoft and ofcourse ps3 has a superior engine.in order to save itself xbox would have to team up with sqaresoft and capcom....you could be angry but facts are facts and cannot be changed

Actually, Nickel-Z, knock it off.
There was no point in your diatribe that could not have been made without the sort of personal attack we discourage around here. Aside from creating a needlessly divisive atmosphere, name calling undercuts an argument already rendered shaky by the assertion that Microsoft's fortunes are assured through a thriving computer sales unit.

When I read your post I was debating if I should even respond your post or just derive questions from your comments. I chose to do the ladder.
"now we all know according to some valid sources that ps3 would have a much powerful engine than xbox2"-I don't remember any 'valid sources' saying anything about ps3 OR Xbox Next, let alone their power. Plus I don't think they would release such statements so early.
"but the risk lies whether it could even go bankrupt this time!"-Are you talking about Microsoft going bankrupt or the Xbox system failing? Either way Xbox is a four-year-old system and I don't think they would suddenly start dropping out of the market.
"i am an us fan..."-I don't know what it's like to be a 'fan' of a country. I guess you could wear like patriotic clothing, and paint your face red, white, and blue, but what does that statement actually have to do with anything?
"ofcourse ps3 has a superior engine."-There's that statement again. PS3 isn't even out yet, so I don't see how you would know that.
"in order to save itself xbox would have to team up with sqaresoft and capcom"-First off, the aforementioned sq u aresoft is now known as Square Enix. I even know that and I'm not a particularly huge fan of the Final Fantasy series. I also think that Sony owns exclusive rights to the company.
"you could be angry but facts are facts and cannot be changed"-Facts? What facts?
P.s. I'm totally weirded out by your linguistic skills. You use big words but the made-up-word you commonly use, “ofcourse” is actually two separate words. I hate to admit this but I didn’t know what ‘cognitive dissonance’ meant.
P.s.s-I was going to go 'Nickel Z style' on this topic but...I guess not. “if sony starts to istall these chips in desktop pcs wht wd happen to amd and intel.”

Of everything I wrote, was that the only thing you picked up on? Seriously, I'm curious. I don't appreciate being hounded for simply calling someone an "idiot" (a mild child insult.) When and if you do ever read the full statement, and the others, you will realize that what was said by nasim007 were in fact idiotic.
I will also briefly point out that I have the freedom of speech, and you may take what I said as a "pesonal attack" but the way it was intended, was as FACT. I strongly believe that this "attack" will bring nasim007 to be more clear, and involves me to type less. Seriously, is there a shorter way to express idiot? When I say something to someone, I'd rather say "idiot" then explain nicely that Microsoft is a huge corporation taht funds themselves 12 times over. Also, it leaves the statement:
"ITS MICROSTOFT YOU IDIOT" leaving more to be researched by nasim. He may not completely understand at first, but if he searches around a little more he could figure out 'hey, I really was being inadequate in my writings, and maybe I should apologize to those who like to be informed of the truth, full truth, and nothing of my opinion in that truth." Thank you, good day.

For the record, Nickel-Z, your freedom of speech can be countered by the Codes of Conduct of the Forums. Metacritic owns this site, and they have the right to curb your "free speech" in their own space. They can, for instance, ban you from entering, if they see fit. I'm a big fan of free speech, and certainly calling someone an idiot fits that bill. But your claim that you calling someone an idiot will better that person in the long run is just silly. It will likely do one of three things:
1. Start a silly war of words that ends in name-calling 2. Will be totally ignored because nasim007 thinks YOU are the idiot 3. Will chase nasim007 away because he doesn't come here to be personally attacked
If you think that your barbs are somehow helping people become more well-thought and well-argued, obviously you haven't paid attention to your own track record. And you have one...you've made comments about people's age, you've picked a fight with one member and threatened to get both of you kicked off the boards, and you constantly assail people's personal choices when they don't jibe with yours...and NOT in an inquisitive way, but merely in a accusatory way. Free speech or not, you're in the habit of making personal attacks and picking fights, and the Moderators and Editors have it well within THEIR rights to tell you to cut it out, or to pull the plug on you entirely.

its okay nickel-z i just wanted you and the other members of the forum to look at those selling figures of ps2/xbox worldwide till now...there are people who say that xbox sold more units ps2 i was just referring to them.....i meant no personal attack
Actually, Nickel-Z is right that the relative failure of the X-Box couldn't possibly bankrupt Microsoft. Their losses on the X-Box came to something like $50,000,000; considerable, but keep in mind that Microsft is a multi-billion-dollar corporation.
Also, to the topic-starter: If you're going to start using fancy phrases like "cognitive dissonance"*, you should at least make your post legible (proper punctuation, capitalisation etc.), or it loses whatever effect it might have.
* - I could swear that you just picked two words from a dictionary at random.

It is true that poor grammar and punctuation can undercut an argument as effectively as ad hominem attacks. If, however, you are going to take somebody to school for that, backing it up with a comment that reveals a gap in your own knowledge is problematic as well.
Cognitive dissonance is a psychological theory dating from the 50s. I'm no psychologist, nor do I play one on TV, but it basically describes the internal conflicts created when an individual holds varying, contradictory attitudes, beliefs, or values. The theory of cognitive dissonance suggests that it is the tendency of indivduals to modify attitudes, beliefs, and values that in order to create the least conflict.
The theory of cognitive dissonance is used frequently to describe and manipulate the behavior of consumers especially as regards advertising and marketing. Describing the conflict that arises in an individual between owning a game system that represents superior technology, but sells poorly worldwide as cognitive dissonance reveals a good grasp of the concept.
Going on to say that cognitive dissonance has led to the downfall of most U.S. companies suggests, however, that nasim007's grasp of business and economic history isn't nearly as solid.
The assertion that a single product line can bankrupt Microsoft is certainly hyperbolic, but I'm intrigued by the lock-step response that Microsoft's sheer size and sales volume make it invulnerable to all comers. I'm no gamer today, but I recall a time when Atari dominated the marketplace. If that example isn't big enough, then extend it beyond gaming into general computer software and hardware and consider the rise and decline of IBM. You can be sure that Microsoft has.

I can't say much more than what LT's already said, but there's a simple point to be made: before you accuse someone of making up facts or ideas, maybe you should do some fact checking. A simple glance in any decent dictionary, or even a quick Google, would have shown that nasim007 wasn't making stuff up. Whether nasim007 is correct in assuming that cognitive dissonance is applicable here is certainly debatable (and, for the record, I agree with LT in thinking he's wrong) but, at the very least, before you jump on him for his claim, make the effort to make sure he is, in fact, making stuff up. I'll take someone whose grammar and punctuation is flawed over someone who fails to do their research any day. But that may be the professor in me...

This is really hard because yes, nasim007 did jump to conclusions with his xbox statement.. which is most definitely faulty. However, I also agree that my comment was deconstructively correct. I think that this is below debate and we should just forget this ever happened. Lastly, (I know this is fueling the fire) PhilosperEric, that was the most sly insult toward anyone I've ever heard. Are you insinuating that you are more correct in your rantings than Biggles because you are a professor? I mean, I thought we were telling everyone to drop this, and then you come and defend what LT said, which is unnecessary.
Not only is it unnecessary, but it looks like you are double-teaming Biggles, who is at least taking a shot at Nasim by himself. I don't want to point fingers, btu its contradictory to tell him to lay off one guy, when you are howling at Biggles. I think you were trying to prove superiority over Biggles, I'm on to your devious ways...Always watching...
Nickel-Z: Thanks. One of the reasons I joined in this argument is because I thought the Moderators were giving you a bit of a hard time.
I looked up "cognitive dissonance". Yes, it's a real phrase, but I still think nasim007's usage was incorrect, and perhaps he should have had a better grasp of the term before throwing it into his argument.
About pE's professor remark: I'm not sure which class he teaches, but his education may very well have involved economics (assuming that "cognitive dissonance" has gone from a psychological term to an economic one as well).
As for Microsoft, it's hard to imagine them going anywhere anytime soon. Bill's a smart businessman and is certain to recognise any potential competition. Certainly, the failure of one (relatively) small line of business isn't going to be the end of them.

Nickel-Z, you can take my comments as you read them, or you can take them correctly. My insinuation was not about my being more correct because I teach at a University...it was merely about the fact that I'd rather read a paper that was grammatically poor but well-researched than vice versa. I wasn't implying that nasim007 was correct...in fact, I said the opposite. I was commenting on Biggles' own take on the topic. Take it as a "sly dig" if you like, but it was merely a statement about my preferences in argumentation.
As far as letting this thing drop, I thought it had come to a decent conclusion with your seemingly sincere apology for your ad hominem attacks. But Biggles re-opened the topic with his screed, and I responded, not as a Moderator, but as someone who thought Biggles was careless in his attack on nasim. What we were trying to tell YOU to lay off of was NOT criticizing anyone's opinions...it was merely the way you were doing it. You attacked nasim007 personally...he never did the same to you. Criticize his facts, criticize his writing...but calling him an idiot is just plain rude. I criticized Biggles for being wrong about his facts, and I criticized nasim007 for the same thing. I know nothing, and care even less, about Microsoft or XBox, (but I assume you and Biggles are right that the failure of Xbox won't devastate the future of Microsoft) so I wasn't debating the facts that you were concerned about. I was merely addressing, at various points, the fact that you had attacked nasim personally and that Biggles had, essentially, done the same (by accusing him of making stuff up and criticizing his writing and grammar). There are PLENTY of other people in these Forums whose use and misuse of grammar, spelling, and generally understandable sentence structure is more frequent and more egregious than nasim007's, and I don't really see anyone making an issue out of those folks.
You can watch my "devious ways" all you like, Nickel-Z. That doesn't bother me in the slightest...but the difference between you and I (based on your history on these Forums) is that I won't call you an idiot or crack on your age or make any other personal attacks (or threaten to start a fight that will get both of us kicked off the playground) when I disagree with you.

Biggles...I apologize if I was "piling on" you. I was trying to make a more general point, but it was directed at your statement, and it may have been more of the same after LT's post. I wasn't trying to call you out explicitly, but only to make a more benign point about fact-checking. My intent wasn't to prove superiority, or anything of the sort. I'm sorry if it came off that way.

I don't believe I've ever threatened to start a fight to get both people kicked off. Maybe you'd like to believe that, but I assume you didn't understand. What I MAY have said is "cut it out or we both will get kicked off" and by that I meant that I didn't want conflict that would result in neither of us being aloud on anymore.
Ontop of that, my LAST comment was more playful than yours. Apparently I struck a cord that offended you, because you made a personal attack at myself, who hasn't really done much to you. Maybe you didn't like my last statement, but Biggles did, because he said thank you . And I appreciate it and am willing to help out a friend. I simply asked you a question, and then told you what I saw you doing. You on the other hand, wrote a large essay on how I am rude, obnoxious and all the other with none of the good. I think I'm better than you give me credit for.
You also should look and see that I FINISHED WITH AN APOLOGY. Well noted in your first response, then off onto a trail of rants about me. I have made a comment about Eccentricsam's age, yes, but I apologized afterwards on that too. Eccentric and I are on good terms now. I'd like to think that the difference you mentioned isn't the ONLY one that stand between you and I, and I'm sure that its not.
One that I can point out that you did not is you stand higher on the site than I. I wouldn't take advantage of that as much as you seem to, and Biggles seems to agree with me that you guys think of yourselves as indestructable, invincible, whatever. I just want to say this is a well worn path and we should finish it with apologies. I think I deserve one from you LuciferEric (kidding)...
Nah, you don't owe me an apology, but I'll just say SORRY TO EVERYONE. Including you, who I don't think I've really done anything to, besides making you type over useless issues that can be resolved by exactly what I'm doing. I already said sorry to Nasim. Sorry, Biggles, for getting you involved. Sorry world, if you feel that I have offended you.
Why do you dorks care which system wins? Your all nothing but bedroom critics hiding behind anonymity. Move out of your parents basement, and get a life.
