It seems that everyone compares the video games industry to the film industry, but in my mind, there's one major difference. Both release an abundance of product in the holiday season (4th quarter - Oct - Dec), but the games industry does not follow the film industry by putting out quality games in the summer time, when young people have so much time to play games! Why is that?

that depends. Alot of games have to worry about deadlines, and extensions, additions, and they just end up releasing whenever they have finished. I truly don't think the industry holds off a product until 'spring', or 'summer', with the exception of christmas. Gaming industry works different than the movie industry.
I think its partly because people are expected to go outside in the summer and companies worry nobody will want to sit in playing games. The main reason though is everdoby chasing christmas money, big franchises released at a time when they will make it onto peoples christmas lists. This is changing slightly however, Capcom have released big games to good sales figures in the first quarter of the last 2 years, (dmc4 in 2008, re5 this year), and there should be a spread throughout next year as games are avoiding this christmas slot and modern warfare 2.
