I've been looking for PS2 games to rent to see if I want to buy them. Right now I'm focused on Shadow of the Collossus and Indigo Prophecy (Once I actually find them at Hollywood Video), but it's really hard for me to find new games I might like, even filtering by the metacritic scores.
In general I'm looking for RPGs and action/adventure games. But, I can't stand games that try to be all gritty and 'street'. No gangster crap especially. And, I like games to be easy to control, but hard to beat. (Simple gameplay with hard enemies..I liked God of War recently).
As for RPGs....something with a lot of original ideas. The game has to either have a unique battle system, or a unique storyline. One or the other is fine, but cookie cutter battle system and cookie cutter storyline will bore me. Specifically, I feel the 'Stand around slicing air' Final Fantasy battle system is showing it's age, and I would only play that kind of game if it were hard enough to maintain my interest, or had a really great plot.
And, I don't care if a game has good graphics or not. Music is irrelevant because I usually mute the TV and listen to music anyway.
So..my tastes in mind, what should I rent? (I know DW8 comes out in two weeks, I'm buying that without renting it).

I'm thinking that Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks would fit the bill well. Yes, it's an action-adventure game similar to Devil May Cry, but there are some elements reprised from the old fighting games, like fatalities.
It's a damn good game.

Hey Bob, didn't know you were a gamer too!! I'm not much of one, but once or twice a year I'll pick up a new game to try and beat. Rented God of War when it first came out and beat it in 3 days....record for me (usually give up and takes me months to finish) After unsuccessful at finishing Silent Hill games, I just picked up Res Evil 4(because of the hype) and Shadow of the Colossus. When I get around to playing them I'll try to remember to fill you in......but... ....rented the Warriors last week, and is a pretty good game. Other than that, I stick to 2K5 Hockey, and a little Metal Gear....

Haven't played The Warriors. If you like Action/RPG type games, Shadow of the Colossus is very, very good. Alot of nice environments and unique elements to explore; the boss battles are really cool. Also played Indigo Prophecy. It's a love it or hate it kind of game, very unique in its cinematic and gameplay elements. You basically spin the joystick to complete little puzzles and it takes thinking to get out of some situations. You also play simon says to fight enemies. Oh, and the storyline and cinematics are totally pwn.

I started playing Shadow of the Collossus, and so far it seems like just a bunch of trial and error to figure out how to damage the bosses, and then once you figure out how, it's not very hard to do it.
I'll keep playing for the five days I have it, but if this is all it is, a series of boss fights where you find the weak point by trial and error, I probably won't end up getting it.
Does anyone know if anything can be done about the camera control issue? The camera seems to meander in all sorts of different directions I don't want it to go in. Like, is there some way to get the camera not to move except by *your* moving it?

Originally posted by Bobthespirit: Well, I tend to play tons of video games for two or three months, then no video games whatsoever for five or six months.
The ads for Warriors make it look like it's in the 'Gangster crap' category I mentioned. Have I been mislead by the ads?
It's a bit different in that it's a spin on a retro movie, so it is fun, but basically you beat up on other peaople and do damage to stuff, so might not be up your alley. I bought Colossus but haven't opened it yet....maybe I'll return it, cause I've heard the same....great looking game, but the camera is out of whack....what should I trade for if I return???? Really loved God of War, and maybe looking for a realistic war game or something that will knock my socks off....

Hmm...Indigo Prophecy is interesting, it has a really intense plot and narrative style.
As for the gameplay, can't say so much for it. It basically involves going through a lot of decision trees, and if you guess wrong, game over. And, reflex button taps, and finding the right actions to trigger. For instance, when you wake up the morning after you were voodoo-controlled to murder somebody, I wandered around looking for the right action to trigger to take care of the cuts your arms. After I've wasted all that time looking for the way to do that (I thought it was washing your hands, apparently it's looking for bandages in the cabinets), the cop shows up, I have a limited amount of time to hide the rest of the evidence, and it autosaves. I think I finally had it all figured out, and then there was this bloody shirt on the ground the cop found, and I had to start over.
The plot *might* be so strong that it warrants suffering through subpar gameplay. Like Xenogears was. The game is like a movie, possibly a very good movie.
But contrary to my usual philosophy, I'm thinking of playing the game on easy so I can experience the plot without having to keep repeating the same part over and over again. (A hard game is only fun if playing the game is...fun!)
