Ok. I'll get us started.

What an absolutely brilliant year for gaming I reckon. My main criterion for voting is joy, unadulterated, sheer joy. Graphics, innovation etc. are all secondary considerations.

Oh, and since I don't have a PS3, this list is only dealing with the Box and the Wii.

No order.

Midnight Club: Los Angeles. Bloody thrilling.
Far Cry 2. Loved the design
Fallout 3. Unique
World of Goo
Okami. Gorgeous. Spellbinding
Gears of War 2
FIFA '09. Better than PES? Incredible
Mario Kart. never gets old
Bully. Much better on the Wii than PS2
Banjo-Kazooie. Fantastic comeback

That's it. I played a ton of others, but these are the ones that really delighted me.
Over to the rest of ya.

Grand Theft Auto IV is the best game of the year in my opinion. Fallout 3 would be next in line.

I also find myself playing a lot of NHL 09.

Other winners include Gears of War 2, Little Big Planet, Guitar Hero World Tour (if friends are over).

PS3 owners should also grab Bioshock, which came out this year on that platform. The Wii is pretty lame as far as games go ... other than Mario titles. I liked Okami better on the PS2 than the Wii (the controls stink on the Wii). Super Smash Bros. is OK.

ahhh okami...
it saddens me greatly that this title flopped and ruined its developers
whilst GTA is some premo top notch gaming there were too many rediculous design descisions to give it top spot imo, such as the weapon scrolling, nothing to spend money on and still no way to truly save favorite cars whilst using them from mission to mission. all these long standing flaws which saints row has happily capitalised on.
fallout definetly awsome, embaressing 3rd person tho
farcry has spectacular scenery, completely ruined by reccuring checkpoint for me however, still havent actually clocked it
fableII spectacular graphics although numerous bugs
my favorite that iv played so far would have to be mass effect, sure its heavily recycled mines and facilitys really marred the motivation for optional exploring and your ai buddys were sometimes retards, but there are so few scifi games which actually allow you to go off an explore planets (too a degree of course)

Persona 4 is my current RPG drug of choice. Definitely not for everyone, though...but one of the best of '08 if you ask me.

Boom Blox is my party game of the year: a multi-player blast for Wii owners.

I just got an xbox 360 this week, so I have a lot of catching up to do. First on the list is Fallout 3...

Fallout 3 is a fantastic game. One of the few games that I've enjoyed enough to spend more than 15 minutes on (I'm looking at you, Halo3 and GTA4).

GOW 2 is sweet. I'm a kid, so I turned off the strong language and gore. Yeah, the gore is pretty sick.

I enjoyed Fallout 3, but let's please refrain from describing it as unique. The setting and premise come directly from the previous Fallout games, and the gameplay is pretty much Oblivion with guns.

Unique means one of a kind. There are games similiar to Fallout, but there is no game that is close enough to be the 'same' as Fallout.

So it is unique by definition, and unique in a broader sense that no other game comes to such a desolate and haunted urban mileu.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Left 4 Dead. It was the best in my opinion. Oh, and of course I loved Fallout 3.

Best game ever: Xcom Terror from the Deep.
The demo was terrifying. What is it with all the games being so tame these days? Gore sure, but where is the scare? Is there Scare and I missed it? Let's hear some!

Probably FIFA, didn't believe it had overtaken PES til I played it myself. Also loved Dead Space, pretty much the perfect survival horror game.
