My favorite is FFX. I'm assuming you have PS2, so if you don't mind the old graphics, go pick up so PSX rpg's. There are lot's of good one's there. Try FFVII first if you haven't before.

Try Fallout 2 for the PC. The graphics are somewhat dated, but the plot is engrossing, the game world is a very unique Northern California post-apocalypse, your party is full of very different types (like a whiz-kid drug dealer, who can create narcotics for you if you give him the right ingredients) and the plot is extremely open-ended. The game came out maybe five years ago, and there hasn't been an RPG like it since. You can play it saintly, or incredibly evilly. You can get married, have sex with prostitutes, become a porn star, become a cyborg, etc. And it is the only RPG I know of that you can finish with out killing anything, if you choose to. You can talk and sneak and steal your way through every situation, if you're patient.

I started playing Chrono Trigger a few days ago, and it's really good. I'm not sure if it will pass FFVII and FFX, though.

Best game straight up is the old final fantasies for super nintendo eg.) FF3 I played that game for like 100 hours and never got bored of it. I also really liked Kotor, Morrowind, and Kingdom Hearts, The Bishop

Right now I'm playing Skies of Arcadia on Gamecube, and when it's all said and done, it might be my favorite.

2. Final Fantasy 2, 3 (really 4,6 in the series) for SNES, great games... great stories
3. secret of mana (SNES)
4. Final Fantasy 3 or 4 for Gameboy (original) - wacky locations and actually the best writing...
5. Chrono Cross for PSX - still some of the prettiest backgrounds of all time, interesting story
6. Final Fantasy Tactics (Actually my number 2)
7. Final Fantasy VII (3)
8. Planescape: torment - really fun RPG, in the vein of Fallout 2, you're a dead guy
