Pop Art was cheeky and irreverent, and glorified common objects while satirizing and poking fun at the rarified traditional “uptown” world of museum and gallery Art (with a capital A). Pop Art also found Abstract Expressionist too contrived and pretentious, and encouraged a freer use of new techniques and materials. The movement was represented by clear lines, sharp paintwork and realistic objects in an often exaggerated scale. Clear representations of clichés, symbols, objects and heroes commonly seen in the popular culture were both iconized and lampooned.
