Looking at some of the games coming out like Call of Duty 4 for 360, and Metal Gear for PS3, it seems as though that is about as far graphically, and as close to real life as can be for a video games system. Do you think video games will be even better looking in say.. 5 years? Will there be a need to buy a "new" video games system later? Is this the limit?

that is a great question that i often ponder, and I agree, i don't know what sort of graphical update can change it drastically enough for me to spend god knows how much on the next system, that why i think nintendo is going for fun and creativity and not graphical enhancements, but great question knuckleface

They can definitely get better. They do look good for games, but they are missing lots of little things that would really make it seem more realistic. Insects, trash, leaves, trinkets, whatever. They should be everywhere. I think lighting and shadows could be improved too.
im truly interested to see how it will look even though ill prolly be an old man by that time

I'm looking forward to the point when graphics can't be improved any more, because it means designers will actually have to put some effort into gameplay again, which they haven't really done for nearly 10 years.

Thats for damn sure. EEEverybody is boasting about the damn graphics, realistic sky this and omg look at that tree/bush. I'm cant upgrade my graphics card everytime the new flavour of the month game comes out. I really play games for.....well, the gameplay and storyline. Nothings wows me anymore...so sad, so sad. Maybe I'm just getting old.
Not sure which systems you guys have, but the 360 has been impressing me in the graphics and gameplay department almost equally. The 360 is clearly the best thing out there so far.

Well, you're either easily impressed or, more likely, just haven't been gaming as long as me and Frikkieman. The Xbox and 360 have been a couple of the worst offenders in the graphics over gameplay issue. Not that many of the other consoles are doing better.

We all thought so in 1995 when the PSone came out with stuff like Tekken and Ridge Racer. I think it happens every time a landmark game or console is launched. I think graphics will go much further in the future, ultimately integrating into real life in a 3d kinda way. The question is: Is this what we want? I'm not sure I want to see games not easily being separated from real life. There IS a difference and that's why we choose to play games in the first place.

Dude.. I've been gamin since the Exite bike on NES Days. Im well aware of the differences of gameplay over graphics. I guess it all boils down to what type of games you're into. If you're an RPG Fan, you're right. Most 360 RPG's are not worth looking into at the moment.. except for oblivion. I have really enjoyed the 360 most so far. Games, like Call of Duty 2, Perfect Dark (Online), GOW, PGR 3, Dead Rising, Burnout, Madden 08, Kameo, and many others are a huge leap graphically, while also givin players great gameplay as well. Feel free to give some 360 game examples that you don't like. Which games have turned you off to the system. Cause Im loving it. Especially using xbox live.

First of all, be carefull when using words like "we all". Because it shows that you don't know what "we all" believed, or believe. Right now, games either look very lifelike, or simply look "real". These systems have even further capabilies, to add further details. The PS3 has one of the most powerful computer systems the world has seen, and if it has the success that the PS2 has, it could easily be the last system people need. As far as modern day video games are concerned.

I doubt that the PS 3 is the end all of be all when it comes to future consoles. But on the other hand there arent really any games out for PS 3 that really flexis its processing muscle. But i am always amazed at how quickly the PC manages to catch up to the consoles. I mean the consoles are manufactured and thats it. But on the other hand the PC gives way too much crap versus thew 360 or ps3. Its always nice to gave a plug n play system. But I'm a litle freaked out about the graphics looking like real life in the future, i mean i dont want to feel like i shot a real person for crying out loud. Guess when I'm 50 years old i will finally understand why my parents are always freaked out about the Violent games i play.
I saw this article the other day on astral projection, which one of the primary benefits would be to make video games much more immersive and lifelike than just watching a screen.
if you really don't want to read the article essentially researchers have been able to manipulate the mind into believing it can separate from the body. pretty interesting, eh?

I find it hard to believe that video games will just stop getting better graphically. There's always something new just around the corner to induce people to buy new games or systems. I think as long as people are buying games, they will continue to evolve graphically and probably in other directions as well.
I remember the first time I saw Shenmue on the Dreamcast, I thought "This was it. This is the pinnacle of a videogame's capability to render real-life characters."
Looking back on it, I see now that it's blocky, glitchy in parts, and the textures are old-hat.
Believe it or not, games will continue to improve graphically. Now if only developers could start working on making them fun.
According to this article, not by much. In fact it claims this is the reason the Wii is outselling the PS3 and the X-Box360. People just aren't impressed by graphics like they used to be and they want something cheaper and different than what we've seen these last few years.
"I can't live the buttoned down life like all of you! I want it all: the terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles! Sure, I might offend a few of the blue-noses with my cocky stride and musky odor - oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called 'City Fathers' who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about what's to be done with this Monkey_Boy?!"

From what I’ve seen of the XB 360 and the PS3, some of the games look astonishing, but there is still a huge difference between the graphics in those games and the exquisite detail of reality’s architecture, either way I don’t believe life like visuals should be the only and main goal of game designers.

games can easily get better graphics: 1. higher resolution textures 2. farther draw distance 3. dont use sprites 4. higher resolution 5. more objects on screen 6. realistic reflections 7. better lighting
Right now i havent really seen an increase in games textures since about 2004. If you really look at some of the textures in games now, there not much higher resolution, there just multiple layers. Like one thats crappy with another layer with a few scratches in it. The draw distance could be longer also. If youve played GTA youll know you can see really far away, but you cant see anything detailed like people or cars, they just disapear a ways away. It still does this in games like Mass Effect. What i meant by sprites is just an effect type. Like in older games tree leaves moved with you. Havent seen this since Halo 3 and HL2 Ep2.(just in trees) There still used for bullets. Higher resoluion = less pixelated. More objects on screen = more realistic (that means physics CoD4!) This ones for Halo3, i was so happy to hear that Halo 3 had realtime reflections on his visor... but then when i played i was like.... hey thats not nice. Thats not realtime like they said. It only shows the background. It doesnt show cortana, or anything else that physically in the game. Im happy with lighting now, but it could still get better. Like games that are suppose to have HDR, just have a crap version of it. As of right now, VALVe has made the best lighting in video games..... and im getting bored.... so.....
