Anime list made in 2008 to 2009.

*relevance is a way to measure how much information we have about a title. Titles start black and become blue as they become more "relevant". Past a certain threshold, titles are completely blue.
**the criteria for "most needing info" is a combination of "least complete" (inverse relevance) and "most wanted" (number of visits received by the anime).

"anime"? For this thread, is this term to be defined narrowly or broadly?

Is "anime" narrowly considered as those that are derived from the Japanese style look and usually sci-fi/fantasy plot?

Or is "anime" any animated film (feature or not) that may include those that have been coming out that combine both animation and live action or even a fusion, blend of both?

I believe we can consider broad - because not only japanese make animes, there are many others doing that as well

sorry for being nit picky but does this broad definition include that fusion of live and animated features like:

Sin City (2005)
A Scanner Darkly (2006)

Part of the reason for this clarity is my belief that the barrier and the distinction between animation and live film has blurred to the point that there may be no distinction at some point.

I don't get it. Ratatouille is NOT a "children's film". Sin City is not an animated film, unless you consider Sky Captain and the World Tomorrow an animated film. Even if you consider those animated films, it doesn't make it so. I'm not sure you should namedrop Ratatouille every chance you get because you don't seem to understand the "context" of that film.

Yet as the same time for a movie such as A Scanner Darkly it has been reported that:

Each minute of animation on this film required 500 hours of work by 50 animators working full-time. And that after the movie was shot, it was then edited and picture was locked before it arrived to the animators. Animators were in post-production for roughly a year and a half. So what was the end result of this movie - were these people animators or not and what is it that they did?

Anyway this thread isn't to decide such a fine distinction and is better dealt with separately, but one can see the difficulty with deciding on what one is talking about. So it may become just more of an arbitrary decision. So what does this thread include? Movies like these or not?

Well those arent animes, but they are more likey animated movies or some sort of, but their target audience is again the anime lovers, the casting and other details are just to attract audience from other genres.

Thus

I can say that we can add those stuff to this topic too, it wouldnt hurt.

My limited exposure to real anime restricts the extent of my list of favorite animated features. My humbled list of top favorites consists of:

1. Spirited Away (2001). An amazing contemporary Japanese animated movie fairy-tale.

2. The Incredibles (2004). The most delicious, socially relevant and dazzling uses of contemporary state of the art animated movies of the best. The brings home the art of the possible and captures the supreme essence of animation at its best.

3. La Planete sauvage (1973). A predecessor to Spirited Away (2001), an animated fantasy of surrealistic proportions.

4. Finding Nemo (2003).

5. WALL*E (2008). A creative innovation in animation using a solid script that requires substantially less dialogue and vastly more difficult physical, visual communication of ideas in this meaningful movie about loneliness, simple emotions and ideas about this only remaining robotic waste collector on earth who accidentally discovers (even unknowingly) the key to the fate of humanity.

6. Run, Lola, Run (1998). A fanciful real live action with some animation about different scenarios regarding a robbery. A creative foreign movie endeavor.

7. Sin City (2005). A great looking live action graphic novel adaptation that brings into virtual reality the animated character drama of the imaginary fifties of male violence, strong women, and big heart only slowed down by unnecessary attempt to fill the screen with too many storylines.

Im not a big fan of American animes except for Avatar (which was heavily influenced by Hayao Miyazaki) I cant put it but they somehow lack something. I like to see the bittersweetness of life, death and other social situations in animes. As you can see my anime choices were all parallel to that.

I watched nearly all of your choices except for run lola run, and Im not a big fan of The incredibles and Finding Nemo. But the plot in Wall*E was very interesting indeed.

I believe Disney and Pixar target children mostly so they try not to reflect real life in their movies (which is a bad thing in my opinion since I believe children should be brought up with eyes open)

Spirited Away is not a matter of discussion for me, since its a masterpiece and all around one of the best anime productions.

La planete sauvage was another masterpiece, well French are good at these things (remember The Triplettes of Belleville for example)

I liked Sin City very much, bittersweet, and heartbreaking.

I urge to see the animes in my list, especially Ghost in the Shell and Grave of the Fireflies. Actually watch them all, each of them are unique and worth the time.

Ghost in the Shell has been both a movie and a television series. I finally saw the movie version which some have placed in the anime classic category yet I came away pretty disappointed in the movie itself. Is the television series any better?

you should watch the series and movies in order, watching only the movie will not give you anything and you wont get the plot, start from wiki GIS and look at the sequence of movies and series watch it then you will like it more. Smiler
