I just saw this film and loved every second of it but....

Can anyone tell me what the hell it is about? And what is a ghost anyway?

as with akira, the plot is too confusing to even try to understand all of it.

I saw I, Robot and they totally stole the Ghost idea, but the film was good

Did it remind you of the matrix a little bit? I mean with the plugs in the back of your neck and everything, and guys looking like agents with the sunglasses and the dress suits?

Definitely! I can see where the Wachowski's got some of their ideas! Even the green letters that scroll down just like in the Matrix!

Has anyone seen Ghost in the shell 2: Innocence ? I did and it was excellent although not quite as inspired as the first one.
The animation is very impressive and the film is quite creepy actually and just as complex as the first one.

I still have yet to see GitS (love that acronym). My local Blockbuster has recently started stocking anime DVDs, so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Ghost in the Shell is a brilliant concept… and movie. Larry and Andy borrowed heavily from Ghost in the Shell; maybe too much, in my opinion.

What are the similarities, you may ask? It’s been a couple of years since I last watched either movie, but here goes…

• The green cryptic characters… and the idea that green dominates the computer world.
  
• The realization of two worlds… the network (or matrix) and the real world.
  
• Sexy raven haired female leads… that can kick anybody’s ass.
  
• The idea of being born into the real world… awaking and emerging from pink goo (amniotic fluid).
  
• Body plugs… to connect to computers.
  
• Black suits and sunglasses… men in black.
  
• Phone booths are practical connections between the real world and the computer domain.
  
• Roof top jump scene, with a one-knee landing… shattering the surface below.
  
• The crumbling pillars, in the midst of major gunfire.
  
• The lines of water spraying up from machinegun fire along a flooded floor.
  
• Sentient artificial intelligences.
  
• The endings in which the main character evolves into a super being… a master of both realms.

…there are probably more, but I can’t think of any others off the top of my head.

Both movies are amazing, but the Wachowski brothers blatantly stole an enormous amount of material from Ghost in the Shell; from general story concepts to exact action scenes. Though… I bet Ghost in the Shell isn’t as original as one might think either. ;-)

GITS was the first anime I bought, great film. The whole thing with ghosts is like souls I guess. I like the deeper story to it, I would elaborate but I can't remember it well :P

I have been bought GITS 2 and do not have GITS 1 - can anyone tell me whether I really need to wait until I get the first one before watching GITS2? I know that anime series can have quite independent story lines.

I’d recommend watching the first one before watching the second. The first is about Motoko and a certain amount about her partner, Bateau. The second is about Bateau. It’s best to understand where Bateau is coming from to appreciate the little things in the second movie.

First of all GIS series and movies must be watched in order to get the point.

Basically the plot in the GIS is: humans losing humanly features while machines gain those features. Simple as that the GIS is not just an anime its the critic of human society. So its also a deeply critical movie with political stubs added to the story line. So it can be rated 16+

To understand and digest the whole concept and philosophy in the series one must have a really open mind and little faith in religion etc.

The technologies introduced in GIS are not that authentic as many ideas have already been introduced to society long before (such as in Blade Runner and Space Odyssey), the strength of GIS comes from how it takes philosophical and social matters into hand.

Its an adult production not because of the bloody scenes or sexuality but from the depth of the subject.

Many people were bored of the long conversations, but GIS needed that to help the audience understand.

Anyway all in all GIS is a masterpiece and a rare delight. It reflects future logically and brilliantly without even needing to leave the planet and go as far as zillion light years away.

Of course it my opinion.
