I doubt it Heather. I can probably guess why they used the term "Fanboys".
1. Video games have been portrayed as a man thing, which is incorrect in today's society.
2. We here at Metacritic, haven't had a woman here to offend, so they probably didn't pay much attention to it.
3. It is like the "One small step for man" it includes women as well.

I'm sure they meant no offense.

Fanboys is just a term of art... not meant to imply gender...

And thanks, Mike, for giving it up that we here at MC are just a bunch of guys...no girls anywhere... We don't need to be reminded of such things.

Gamecube maybe the worse seling of the 3 consoles in the US, but I think it has a niche that helps its sales.

Let's be honest, PS2 and Xbox are fighting over the 20 something gamer for their entertainment dollar. Gamecube does skew a bit younger. It does have a Disney type image also.

Many people want them to shake that image to sell more. Here is something though, if they shake that image, I think they are alienating their fan base. Nintendo makes a ton of games that I feel very comfortable giving to kids. When your 20, you don't care about this. But, when you start watching kids (or you have your own) there is a piece of mind in knowing you can throw SSBM or Mario Kart Double Dash, and get the kids out of your hair for a few hours, and know the f word isn't going to fly out of Mario's mouth.

I won't throw a random PS2 game in from any developer. I'm not saying there aren't games kids can play on other systems, but there are more foucsed on the Cube.

If I'm Nintendo, I'm very happy with where I'm at this generation. They are making money, I would keep going. If the Cube isn't making money (not just on Cube sales, but when you count all the money from royalties etc), I'd get out of the console business, but it is making money.

To be a "fanboy" (or girl) of a certain system really robs you of what the other systems have to offer.

Nintendo's 1st party games are almost always instant classics but other systems give you time to play other hot titles that the Cube won't be getting while you're waiting for Nintendos releases.

If I was rich maybe I'd complain about the cube not having enough games but I'm not rich and I only have so many hours in the day to play video games so I'm not too worried about the cube's comparitively small library, though it is one of the reasons the cube doesn't sell well.

Nintendo has tried hard to shake it's kiddy image with darker titles like Metroid Prime and Eternal Darkness and of course the Resident Evil series, and nintendo has attracted a lot more third party developers since the N64 days.

In any case Nintendo will always be with us because it's the only place to find the continuations of their incredible 1st party games that gamers like me from the 8 and 16 bit generation need like we need oxygen.

I really have to agree with Brian. Now I've got nothing against Nintendo, don't get me wrong, but I just don't think this is their console. And no, I'm most certainly NOT basing that on the fact that it is the worst-selling of the platforms. It would be downright fallacious to say that there is any direct correlation between what sells and what is good. But with no DVD player, no online play, and a frustrating concentration on the kiddy market, it's hard to argue against it. Now I think Nintendo is making the right moves to get the Cube back on track (dropping price to $99, and I've heard rumors of new games going online), but I think the ship has sailed on this one. And Resident Evil 4 no longer being a GCN exclusive I think is the nail in the coffin.

I have to say though, I think now that the PSP will be $300!( Eeker ) and have a 2 hour battery life, that Nintendo will do quite well with the DS. Your thoughts?

First of all, I don't understand this new obsession with DVD players and online play. They aren't necessary on a gaming machine, especailly the DVD player. We've used the player on our PS2 probably less than 10 times. Online play is fine an dandy, but Nintendo made it clear that trying it on the Cube would not be in anyone's best interests. Nintendo aiming at the "kiddies" is only partially true. Sure, a large number of their games seem graphically simplistic and colorful, but I can name about a dozen games off the top of my head that I would buy for the Gamecube if I had one, and I would consider none of the kiddie. I feel sorry for poor Mario. Everything he's in get's a kiddie label, for who knows what reason. Yeah, the GameCube editions of Zelda and Mario dissapointed, but Nintendo learned from that lesson, and is trying to rectify it.

Basically, your points are partially valid, but I don't see how they make the Cube "worse" in any way. Hell, I want one. There are far more games on the Cube that I'm interested in than on any other console.

As for the DS vs PSP, the $300 price tag and the 2 hour battery life have both changed a bit for the better, I believe. However, the DS has large advantages in price, and the earlier release date will probably be much to Nintendo's benefit. I only hope that the preconception that Nintendo is for children does not hurt it.

I reserve the right to be entirely wrong.

I've played all the consoles. I'm not fanatical about any of them, so this is a pretty unbiased opinion:

Xbox is easy the best in terms of power, graphics, sound (only one that truely supports Dolby Digital...sends a digital signal to your receiver). It also has the best controller by a long shot. I can't imagine anyone seriously argueing with this. Xbox however has the fewest great proprietary games, and almost no good games for children.

Gamecube is the 2nd best in terms of graphics, power, etc. It has the 2nd best controller, although it's lacking on buttons, so I can understand if people think PS2 controller is better. Gamecube does have the smallest library of games. But it's Nintendo, enough said. Metroid, Zelda, and Mario...over the years Nintendo has produced several masterpieces for these series. I bought the gamecube just to play Zelda and Metroid...maybe some Mario too. It also has the most great games for kids.

PS2...it's the oldest and weakest of the systems in terms of power. I find the controller to be dated and uncomfortable. It does have a huge game library, and many many proprietary games. The only reason to chose a PS2 is if you have to have their proprietary games. Between Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, etc, a lot of people will make that choice.

When it comes to chosing a system, the games are the deciding factor. If you aren't addicted to any proprietary game series, chose xbox no brainer. Between KOTOR, Halo, and all the games released on all systems, you'll have endless hours of fun...if you're over 17 of course. Otherwise you won't be allowed to buy most of xbox's good games.

If you have the $$ buy an xbox and the other system(s) for their proprietary games. Metroid and Zelda make the cube a bargain, and the Final Fantasy Series makes the PS2 worth every penny as well.

Gamecube gets a lot of criticism for kiddy games, but I'm glad at least Nintendo will still make games that are brilliant and incredibly fun for all age groups. Windwaker for example...an absolute masterpiece that thrills anyone from 8 to 88.

If I had to own only 1...Xbox hands down. Only 2, xbox and gamecube only because I like Metroid and Zelda better than Final Fantasy.

In the end, it boils down to personal taste to determine which is the better choice for you.

You cannot say which console is the "best" or the "worst". Each console has it's own unique and interesting games and advantages.

I'm also sick and tired of people saying that Gamecube is kiddy system. True, Gamecube has a lot of E-rated games, but does that mean the games are bad? Definately not! Nintendo focuses mainly on family-oriented games, but also has many mature game such as the Resident Evil series, Eternal Darkness, and Metroid Prime.

Gamecube also has exclusive Nintendo games such as Mario, Samus, Zelda, etc. X-box and PS2 may have some, but none of them are as memorable as Nintendo's.

One of the few flaws of Gamecube is that it doesn't support online play. However, Gamecube is still a great multiplayer system because it has games such as Mario Party, SSBM, Super Monkey Ball, and more.

Also, Gamecube doesn't have DVD. It's not a big thing to me because DVD's are cheap nowadays.

just because the ignorant public labels the Gamecube as a kiddie console does not mean it is. The Gamecube and it's library is targeted initially to the old school gamers who've been playing video games for a long time. As with all consoles and its game, the owner has to have an acquired taste for them. I fit in well into this category because I've been playing with Nintendo and Sega consoles since they both released theirs. Nintendo isn't doing so well now, but it's been able to keep it's fans and long-time audiences satisfied. Nintendo is doing what they can to stay aloft by supporting games they know will become a runaway success (RE4 will be heavily advertised in the UK this month). Sony and Microsoft have more money, therefore they can afford risks because they can make up for it.

Well I must admit the Gamecube has the smallest games library and I'm not particularly happy with the various Pokemon and Mario titles (with the exeption of the excellent Mario Sunshine and Mariokart).

Playstation and XBox have the greatest variety of games...still I am very pleased with my Gamecube.

I don't play online games, so the critiques about Gamecube's versions of 3rd party games that are worse than Playstation's and Xbox's versions because Gamecube's copies don't support online multiplayer mode are irrelevant for me.

Yes Playstation and Xbox have more titles...but how many games are you supposed to play?
I have more than enough games at the moment to keep me busy for months and most great 3rd party games are available for Gamecube too, for instance: Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell.

And I can live without great games like Halo, God of War, Gran Turismo, Silent Hill, Half Life and Ninja Gaiden where I cannot live without Zelda - The Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine and Mario Kart. Three titles that beat great Playstation and Xbox games.

Having said that...I will finally buy a Playstation too, because there are a few games that simply are up to par with Zelda: ICO (which I own already), Shadow of the Colussus and GTA San Andreas...and yes I will have a look at God of War, maybe Band of Brothers.
Buying an Xbox? I don't think so, Half life, Halo and Ninja Gaiden are great, but not exceptional like ICO and Shadow of the Colussus and I find it rather ridiculous to have 3 gameconsoles...I'm having a hard time already finishing the games I own.

The Gamecube has enough games to keep me busy...and the console is very reliable...never load problems, never freezes, no disk noises, no very slow loading times.

I hope my (future) Playstation will not have the problems I often read about...
