I only saw about the second half of this movie, but it seemed well done and I'm wondering why it was overlooked for the oscars. If I remember correctly, it had a score in the mid 80's on metacritic. Any thoughts?

Awesome movie. The two bears fighting was fucking balls, as well as the part where Timothy bitches out the park service. I would have liked to hear the audio of him getting mauled, and hope that awful ex-girlfriend didn't follow Herzog's advice and destroy the tape.

I agree that Grizzly Man was an awesome movie. Is it possible that it was overlooked as a documentary for the Oscars because it was considered a foreign film? And perhaps it was overlooked in the foreign film category because it was a documentary? Or perhaps the Screen Actors Guild just didn't like a film that focused on a tree-hugging do-gooder living in a fantasy world?

PS: I hope she did destroy the tape with the audio of the mauling, but she is perhaps nutsy enough to have kept it. If you really seriously want to hear the authentic sounds of suffering just volunteer in a hospital in a warzone or third world country, or find that nutsy girlfriend.

i saw the stretched out discovery channel version, (probably an extra half hour to an hour) and the girl said she decided not to destroy the tape, but not listen to it either.

Personally I wouldn't listen to or keep a tape of my girlfriend getting eaten alive by a bear. But that's just me, I guess.

Many people, usually scientists, have approached bears or other animals in the wild the way Timothy did...he just got drunk on his "invincibility" and did it all the time. I don't think he was an idiot or crazy, just a little lost and obsessed. Anyway, great film.

I loved the Grizzly Man's enthusiasm. I wish I was so passionate about something. Is it a tragedy if you are conquered by that which you love most? I don’t feel sorrow for the “man” only for the loss of his girlfriend.
I would recommend this movie.

I think it's a bit of an over-simplification to just write him off as an idiot or a mad man. If you watch closely you can see that he is really just a wounded soul looking for a place to belong. The closest he came was in this dangerous world of wild animals. It made him feel something that wasn't his pain and so he got addicted to it. Really he was no more mad then any addict who drowns himself in his addiction.

I saw a discovery documentary of a man who takes in orphaned cubs in Canada or may have been Russia can't remember... but gives them the skills to survive in the wild, he seem to have an understanding of bears behaviour sadly Treadwell did not
