Wow this is a really old thread, but with the talk of a new Metallica album I thought I'd make a post.
I have to agree with camtemple, everyone is a sell out in the music industry and who cares? I certainly don't, so long as the band is making good music which I didn't consider St Anger to be.
I can see how some people may consider Metallica soft for their behaviour in that Documentary, however you have to consider how frustrating it would be spending almost every day around the same three people, being stuck on a bus with the same three people, sinking into a pit of alcoholism and god knows what else whilst being isolated by their fame and the possibility that they may of had deep seeded personal issues long before they achieved mass success.
If you consider how many big bands fall apart, you may find this documentary is an interesting insight into the psychology of rock stars and their inflamed egos, self indulgence and self pity.
I thoroughly enjoy all of Metallicas albums, and although I can see the change in style I don't really understand the purists hate for Black, Load and Reload since I love several songs of those albums, and you can't expect a band to stay the same forever. Metallica may have lost it, but I reserve hope that St Anger was a bad phase that they had to get out of their system and that their new album will redeem it.
