Yes Eccentro, Many of us have seen and enjoyed this, but calling it a documentary strains credulity. When you have actors playing HP, his wife and Crumb, you must be looking at a fictional film, no matter how original it is. I will give you credit, E, another great thread.

Eh, I guess you're right. I had a hard time deciding which forum I should post this thread on. Seeing that "AP" had documentary-style scenes and that the Documentary message board had one thread, I decided to post it here.
I think in deciding whether a film qualifies as a "documentary" you have to look not at what it's based on or whether it has documentary portions (hell, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind had documentary portions, and no one knows what the hell that movie was- but it isn't a documentary), but at, as the Academy Awards say, it "promotes a non-fictional stance." American Splendor was always intended as a great work of fiction, and it is- it's a terrific film.
