I liked it. I dunno if it will end up on any year end Best Of lists, but I really enjoyed it. It was fun watching the cat and mouse game between Ryan Phillipe and Chris Cooper, just waiting for that final pounce in the end. I found the movie to be a moderately paced movie with no overacting that seems to come with most CIA dramaction films lately. Laura Linney was good as the maternal CIA godmother type deal of Phillipe: she played her character straight the whole time.

I suppose my favorite aspect of the film, however, was what you didn't see. You really had to concentrate on the facial expressions of the actors, as the whole film is about the deception of those around you. For those who haven't seen the film yet, try focusing on their expressions, especially Cooper, considering what he's keeping secret (Oooooh..!) Anywho, give the film a shot, and if you don't like it, feel free to throw random, solid objects at my head.

Italy invented fascism. Mussolini in 1922 said, "Right, we're all fascists", but most Italian people are always on scooters, going, "Ciao!"

Smiler I just finished watching this movie and WOW. This is among my personal favorite movies of the year. Avoiding the typical action/adventure/thriller motiff, this movie is directed straight and if to be believed close to the truth as one individual involved as possible. Chris Cooper does a fantastic job, an Academy Award, Golden Globe nomination performance, in part, due to this talent and the amazing script. The personalities and the focus on psychology makes this espionage movie unique and a stand out among spy movies.

Yes indeedy. What a pleasant surprise!

A damn fine, modest budget film, with one of my fave actors...Chris Cooper.

Unreservedly recommend it.
