I'm less bothered by the presence of The Nanny Diaries on your list than I was Spiderman 3. That movie was a giant steaming pile. It made Michael Bay's Transformers look good, and that's an accomplishment. Luckily, the existence of a third Pirates of the Carribean movie saved it from being the absolute worst movie I saw last year.

The supposedly "sappy" Spiderman 3 movie had what I considered a fascinating evil character not sufficiently seen in most movies, the Sandman. I really appreciated having an opportunity to experience an anti-evil-evil character. For once, a movie cast a role of a normal human being caught up in some accident like Spiderman himself, but while on the surface evil gets its name, like too many instances in real life, this movie is able to reveal that truth is much more than the superficial presumptions we make about people. Thus, the truths presented to the young people who enjoyed this movie the most and the wide exposure that this movie had to the general audience becoming the 15 on the all-time box office list with $336.5 million domestically makes what I feel a worthwhile contribution to the public as a mainstream movie and thus a top ten film for 2007. My list is not based just on technical merits only but on its ability to interact with the general public and present some valuable emotional and social developmental insights. Movie don't have to be all about entertainment, when a movie can entertain and educate at the same time, it gets double value in my book and that's what Spiderman 3 does. I don't really even feel that There Will Be Blood or No Country for Old Men can say the same thing - those movies were more about the art and the style, but little substance in terms of message or growth development, or learning something truly worthwhile.

I agree with you, but unfortunately, I thought it failed on both counts. As for a good mainstream movie with a good message, how about Ratatouille? Even though I thought it was a tad overrated, I'd say the message was far more provoking than what Spidey 3 had to offer.

As for better mainstream movies I've seen since Titantic, I'd say:

Saving Private Ryan, There's Something About Mary, Shakespeare In Love, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, American Beauty, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Minority Report, Batman Begins, The Incredibles, Casino Royale, Mission Impossible III, The Bourne Ultimatum, and Ratatouiile.

All those were in the top 10 grossing films for the year they were released.

Hmmm some interesting choices on your list tabuno. I knew that your list would probably be significantly more eccentric than other lists but how can anyone place premonition in a top 10 list of 2007? It's just a terrible movie with a mediocre actress.

"The Lives of Others" was a good little film. Same with "The Wind That Shakes the Barley". Did those both come out in 2007? Seems like ages ago.

I have to say my "guilty pleasure" for 2007 was Hairspray. I saw it with my girlfriend, and we were just laughing the whole time. It was so much fun. Movies rarely do that these days. Having also liked the original version with Riki Lake, this one actually surpassed it, not to mention my expectations. Travolta probably should've been nominated for supporting actor. The other great comedy of 2007 was Hot Fuzz. Superbad and Knocked Up were definitely good, but Hot Fuzz is classic. Simon Pegg is awesome.

I feel the only way you can feel guilty about the newer Hairspray is if you don't like it.

Some of the movies listed above made it to my favorite movie list:

43 - Spiderman 3
59 - The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
62 - The Incredibles
70 - The Sixth Sense
81 - American Beauty
84 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
246 - Shakespeare in Love

Missing:

The Matrix (planned on putting onto my list)
Saving Private Ryan (thanks I had thought I put this movie on my list).

I'm willing to give this decision another shot, if I get a chance to see PREMONITION AGAIN. I just recall that particularly the ending wasn't the run of the mill ending and that it really made for a decent climax and that the movie raised some emotionally important "what if" questions about real life. I enjoy Sandra Bullock and believe that she's an under-rated actress and perhaps she's choosen to enjoy the fluff stuff instead of beat herself over the serious stuff.

RATATOUILLE was more about a feel good, popular self-confirming message instead of the edgier SPIDERMAN 3 message about the complexity of the human personality and how sometimes we are too quick to assume criminal behavior with a criminal mind. As I deal with criminals on a weekly basis, this identification with what criminals go through struck a deep cord within me.

both came out in 2006, but were released in US theaters in 2007 - hence why they are on my list.

So I checked out Sweeny Todd and Juno. Both were great. Of the 2 I thought Juno was better all around. The acting nod however goes to Sweeny Todd's Depp and Bohnam. Then again, how can you go wrong with those two.

I'll watch No Country for Old Men tonight, then i'll be ready to put my top 10 together.

Here are the winners from this year’s SAG awards:

Supporting Actress – Ruby Dee, American Gangster
Supporting Actor – Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men
Actress – Julie Christie, Away from Her
Actor – Daniel-Day Lewis, There Will Be Blood
Overall Cast – No Country for Old Men

There were a few surprises and I felt that Ellen Page deserved the Best Actress award but oh well.
