I have seen a ton of movies from '07. 4 Months was just incredible. Acting, dialogue, Direction, & fantastic camera work. I didn't think anything would beat Zodiac but 4 Months, which I saw at the end of the year, finally won the top spot for me.
A couple other noteworthy releases for me were Gone Baby Gone & the hugely underrated fantasy film Stardust.
I have not seen I'm Not There, The Diving Bell & the Butterfly, and Persepolis.

1408 & Breach are really good. Chris Cooper gave the best unsung performance of the year. He should have been nominated for best actor.
I'll send you back to the other planet. I thought Breach was a mediocre espionage thriller. It wasn't terrible, but ultimately forgettable. I also thought for a "thriller" it was surprisingly light on thrills.
1408 started off pretty good, and I did think it had potential, but it suffered the same fate as a lot of Stephen King's stories in that it got completely ridiculous and over-the-top about midway through. I think King is great at set up and terrible at payoff.

----- We want our film to be beautiful, not realistic.
Calling from Planet X. How can you have as your motto that "We want our film to be beautiful, not realistic." and then at the same moment allow for 1408 to "start off pretty good" and then complain about it becoming completely ridiculous and over-the-top? This was a horror thriller not a realistic movie about a writer trying to rationalize the strange going ons at a hotel. This was a beautiful movie and a not realistic one - that's what we want and that's what we got to say it in your own words.

Another call from Planet X. What I especially enjoyed about Breach was that this movie wasn't an espionage thriller, it was a espionage psychological movie based on a true event. What made this movie special was that it didn't treat the espionage material like just another mediocre thriller movie, instead it became a drama about espionage and allowed Chris Cooper to offer up one of the best performances of the year.

I have an update ready but before I post it, do you all want a surprise and no updates until I post the final results or a weekly update? Just let me know.

Based on the few responses so far (unless there really aren't that many posters), at least from a statistical standpoint, an update wouldn't really mean a lot at this point.

Atonement Assassination of Jesse James... Into the Wild In the Valley of Elah Margot at the Wedding Sicko
Same here, besides Atonement I still need to see all of the other films on your list. I also still need to see Lars and the Real Girl, The Savages, Before the Devil Knows Your Dead and Persepolis. I am sure I forgot some but that is a lot already!

I would like to see those four too, but none of them are playing around here, and none of them have DVD releases before I need to submit my list, so they're sadly not going to be contenders.

Gotta say I'm surprised nobody's mentioned 3:10 To Yuma, absolutely flawless film. Great score, excellent direction and cinematography, as well as three very well done performances by Christian Bale, Russell Crowe and Ben Foster

I like it a lot as well and my list isn't done yet but it might crack my top 12. I just thought that this was such a strong year for films.

I made a mistake in my first post about when the lists are due. I was looking at the January calendar when I said that. The lists will be due February 21 (that's only 2 days before what I originally stated) and that's exactly two weeks from now. I know there are a lot of film watchers here so get them in!
