To or from the road to ruin.
I've got the sense to make

"Are You Swimming In Her Pools" written and sung by Spencer Krug for Swan Lake on Beast Moans.

- you said your love was fierce and I agree with you

- And please is not a word that I ever said quietly

-I love the way he says and does she fucking know with such urgency, like he's scared to get caught.

Because of that, I suspect that this song is about a torrid love affair, but, like the rest of the album, the meaning behind the words is impossible to speculate.

Krug is my favorite current lyricist.

My favorite lines of 2006:

from AFI's The missing frame

One at the time, constants become surreal
One at the time, heart attacks are concealed
I can see that I
Lose the joys of life
One at a time

It bugs me that he recycled the 'fires have to burn alive to live' line for swan lake though. I'm pretty sure the same line was on a sunset rubdown song.

Yeah he did, but he prefaced that with "I've said it before, and I'll say it again," so he's obvious about it. Dan Bejar does that in the Swan Lake album too, I believe, but don't quote me on that.

"Every lighning rod has got to watch the storm clouds come" another great line by Krug.

"I want to be alone, but I want your body," I like that one too.

Lines of the year:

"I'm wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be." (Bob Dylan, MODERN TIMES)

"Some lazy slut has charmed away my brains!" (Bob Dylan, MODERN TIMES)

"I was a lover before this war." (TV on the Radio, RETURN TO COOKIE MOUNTAIN)

"There is a rusty light on the pines tonight
sun pouring wine, lord, or marrow
down into the bones of the birches
and the spires of the churches
jutting out from the shadows
the yoke, and the axe, and the old smokestacks and the bale and the barrow
and everything sloped like it was dragged from a rope
in the mouth of the south below" (Joanna Newsom, YS)

"When I'm at war I insist on slaughter and getting it on with
the hangman's daughter.
She needs release.
She needs to feel at peace with her father, the fucking maniac..." (Destroyer, RUBIES)

"An eagle swooped down from a semi-trailer
Took the name of your town
From a sharp-toothed freighter
And if I knew then what's so obvious now
You'd still be here" (Neko Case, FOX CONFESSOR BRINGS THE FLOOD)

"That the meteorite is a source of the light
And the meteor's just what we see
And the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee

And the meteorite's just what causes the light
And the meteor's how it's perceived
And the meteoroid's a bone thrown from the void that lies quiet in offering to thee"
- Joanna Newsom, Emily

"What would you give
in order to get your hands
on the utmost in luxury blood…
only to have yours flushed out completely
and replaced with that of a nice bright white"
- Subtle, Mercury Craze

"Suddenly, all your history's ablaze
Try to breath as the world desintegrates
Just like autumn leaves we're in for change
Holding tenderly to what remains
And all your memories are as precious as gold
And all the honey and the fire which you stole
Have you running through all your red cheek days
Shaking loose these songs from their sacred hiding space"
- TVOTR, Provinces

"And this one bitch called me Fat Albert
The way my pockets had the mumps you know that Ghost is 'bout it
Then I asked these young ladies do they buff helmets
They said fuck you, took a sniff and then they didn't tell me
Just because you left home, this is Tone...Yo you see I flip stones
Birthstone, you ain't grown fuck around and get boned
Peerage pretty young ladies lost at six, Gucci kicks
And they picky when it come to they dick
If y'all ladies was all mine I'd teach you well
Free tales, sweet smells, slee? well hear bells
Before you sleep read your books like it was mah fanmail
And when you wake ? you woman the whole world can tell
Word life, put you to school when the clubs'll stop
College girl, pay for your books at 200 a pop
And all I ask in life's for you to be careful
Stay focused, take care of your health
Have kids and marry a prince
Good luck and happiness
And no longer shut yourself in, taste the pain, the sorrow
The sun'll shine and still come out tomorrow"
- Ghostface Killah, Big Girl

One of my favorite wtf lines of 06:

"fat children took my life" - Jarvis Cocker

I still don't know if the song is supposed to make sense.

"Wild Sage" by The Mountain Goats

i leave the house as soon as it gets light outside
like a prisoner breaking out of jail
and i steal down to business 15-501
like i had a bounty hunter on my tail

and somebody stops to pick me up
but he drops me off just down the block
and along the highway
where the empty spirits breed
wild sage growing in the weeds

walk down the soft shoulder and i count my steps
headed vaguely eastward, sun in my eyes
and i lose my footing and i skin my hands breaking my fall
and i laugh to myself and look up at the skies

and then i think i hear angels in my ears
like marbles being thrown against a mirror
and along the highway
where unlucky stray dogs bleed
wild sage growing in the weeds

and somedays i don't miss my family
and somedays i do
somedays i think i'd feel better if i tried harder
most days i know it's not true

i lay down right where i felt cold grass in my face
and i hear the traffic like the rhythm of the tides
and i stare at the scrape on the heel of my hand
til it doesn't sting so much and until the blood's dried

and when somebody asks if i'm ok
i don't know what to say
and along the highway
from cast off innumerable seeds
wild sage growing in the weeds

The Streets: Mike Skinner can always be relied on for some good ones:

From "When You Wasn't Famous":

"See the thing that's got it all fucked up now is camera phones.
How the hell am I supposed to be able to do a line in front of complete strangers when I know they've all got cameras?"

From "Prangin' Out":

"I get back from tour and suddenly it doesn't seem like much fun to be off my face at quarter to 11am"

From "The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living":

"She said she didn't have a bloke, another lesson marked down
Verbal agreements aren't worth the paper they're marked on"

OK, that's enough. I could probably keep pulling from the album, though.

Nice picks with The Decemberists and Muse choices.

I somewhat like Sean Lennon's "Friendly Fire" but his voice really does suck. If only he practiced more and made albums more often he could develop some kind of chops but he really does his father an immense injustice with that voice. This isn't to say that he has to and should live up to his father's insurmountable shadow but he should at least try to better his voice from that weak, 11-year old voice that he does have.

I don't mind his voice too much. It is a little weak and maybe if he got a vocal coach and sang a little deeper people would actually take him more seriously and begin to appreciate his border line genius songwriting.

Blacj Holes and Revelations and The Crane Wife were two of my favorite albums from this year so, naturally, I had to picj lines form two of my favorite songs (of the year as well) from those albums
