You should check them out, as I think you'd like both. Especially Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs, which I remember being the first of the late-90s epic Dave Fridmann-produced albums. When The Soft Bulletin came out, a lot of people were comparing it to Deserter's Songs, which came out the previous year, I believe.

But I just don't like the vague, boring lyrics and the incredibly underproduced music.
If you're going to have an electronic album, at least make use of the stuff you have to make a fuller sound.
Agreed. It's inhuman, distant, and emotionless. At least The Knife stole from all the right people and created something people could connect with.
I don't hate it, but it's way down my list of albums for the year, and it's not a super competitive year to boot. The two questions it makes me ask are... 1)Is this the middle of the end of Radiohead that Hail to the Thief hinted at...The Bends thru Amnesiac were so relentlessly inventive and varied...but the Eraser is absolutely monolithic. 2) Thom Yorke gets most of the credit as the band's resident genius...but this album suggests it might be the other way around...Thom's the driving force, but it's the Greenwoods et al that bring the instrumental and conceptual magic to the table that has enabled the band to set itself apart for so many years.

The way I hear it, the band is a band, not just a pilot for Yorke or Greenwood. Which would indeed explain why The Eraser totally failed my expectations. quote: Originally posted by Illiniq: 1)Is this the middle of the end of Radiohead that Hail to the Thief hinted at...The Bends thru Amnesiac were so relentlessly inventive and varied...but the Eraser is absolutely monolithic.
I really don't think so, but only time will tell. I love Radiohead and I sincerely hope they haven't run out of ideas just yet.

The one album that disappointed me the most this year has definitely been "Get Lonely" by The Mountain Goats. It suffers from some serious pacing issues and has only one standout track ("Get Lonely") compared to their previous releases "The Sunset Tree" and "Talahasse" which are solid the whole way through.

I'll second this. What a snoozer.

And this is different from previous Mountain Goats albums how?

The previous albums had tunes. This one doesn't really. It's supposed to be all about the lyrics with Darnielle, but lyrics just don't make a song for me. The music's got to be there first.

Another thing that annoys me about Get Lonely is that it's supposed to be this really sad break-up record, but there's only one song that actually sounds sad (and it's the only song I really like, "Maybe Sprout Wings.") Yeah, the lyrics are pretty good and depressing, but like I said, songs are about the music, man.

I certainly am not a Mountain Goats expert or maybe even a fan, but The Sunset Tree seemed very solid to me, musically, lyrically and vocally, even if I came to it late.

Yeah, I agree. The Sunset Tree was solid (as were the previous 2 tMG albums, We Shall All Be Healed and Tallahassee). Get Lonely's a whole 'nother thing, though.

"Get Lonely" just lacks both the tempo and the biting humor of Darnielle's lyrics that make The Mountain Goats such an awesome band.

Get Lonely isn't a bad album, but it's a dissapointing follow-up to one of the bext albums of the decade, in my opinion.
I'm a little torn on Beat Moans by Swan Lake (the band comprised of Casey Mercer of Frog Eyes, Dan Bejar of Destroyer/New Pornographers, and Harold Krug of Wolf Parade/Frog Eyes/Sunset Rubdown). It's a pretty darned good album, but it isn't as good as the recent Wolf Parade or Sunset Rubdown albums. However, I think that I like Bejar's vocals on this album more than on Rubies.
It could grow on me, but it initially seems to be less than the sum of its parts.

I've been torn about whether to buy it.(n.1) What's it like? Does it sound more like Wolf Parade or Destroyer or, who is it, Frog Eyes? I've also been torn about whether to download Sunset Rubdown from eMusic. What is it like? I liked Apologies to the Queen Mary, but I think it was a bit overrated. _______________________ (n.1) Incidentally, is it "Beat Moon" or "Beast Moon"?

Oops, I meant Beast Moans.
Umm...let's see. If you've heard Destroyer's Rubies, and you liked the freewheeling/unstructured nature of the songs, you might like Swan Lake. All three of the lead singers personal bands (ie. Destroyer/Sunset Rubdown, not NP/WP) are somewhat similar in that the song structure isn't particularly traditional, and all three singers have unique/distinctive voices.
Really, I would almost compare the band most to Sunset Rubdown, but if you haven't heard either, it's hard to expain their sound.
Let's put it this way, Sunset Rubdown resembles Wolf Parade about as much as Destroyer resembles The New Pornographers.

I'm sold; I'll get both "Beast Moans" and "Shut Up, I'm Dreaming." Do the discs include worthwhile art/liner notes or the like? Put differently, is there a good reason to invest in the discs instead of downloading them on eMusic? (I realize that it's too early to tell if Beast Moans will be available on eMusic, but still.)

Not to my knowledge, but I don't own proper copies of either disk.

Cosign...just heard it for first time last night and was struck by 1) how similar it sounded to Sunset Tree and 2) how consistently the songs were not in the same league. A similar, but much flatter, far less moving affair. Also, I know a lot of people love it, but I've completely given up on J. Dilla's Donuts...some of it's beats are pretty sweet (though nothing that would make you want to toss your Kayne or Outkast albums out), but the way it's presented, in relentless brutal hard cuts every 50 seconds or so, I just cannot get into it. Definitely my most disappointing album of the year.

I really like Get Lonely. I think musically, it's a shift up from previous releases. What about the horns on "If you See Light" or the piano on "Song for Lonely Giants"? I think songs like "Wild Sage", "Woke up new" and "song for Lonely Giants" are equally as sad and beautiful as "Maybe Sprout Wings". John Darnielle thinks this album is much better than The Sunset Tree and so do I.

That's weird that Darnielle has said that. I don't get it.

Well, Darnielle consideres his lyricism the prime part of his albums, much more important than the instrumentation that accompanies the lyrics. I like good lyrics and all, but for me it's 90% about the music. And for the record, I do like the lyrics on Get Lonely better than those from The Sunset Tree. "Wild Sage" is a pretty decent song as is the title track and "In the Hidden Places." Overall, though, I'll never want to listen to this album again.
