Trout Mask Replica was certainly not Beefheart's most reigned in effort...
Are you also implying that the Straight Story is Lynch's best?
Good challenge vitunk...
Trout Mask is clearly not Beefheart's most reigned in effort...I have to admit that for myself, I find Safe as Milk and Clear Spot far more appealling, and what I do tend to enjoy most on Trout tends to be the more conventional stuff (ie. Title Track/Moonlight in Vermont) though on that album nothing is truly conventional.
As far as Lynch, I'm not referring to Straight Story, but would take it even a Notch further...I think the best thing Lynch ever did was the opening season of Twin Peaks.
Funny thing - I was just thinking that if I had to choose just one of Lynch's 'things' it would be Twin Peaks.
I haven't heard Clear Spot yet. It's hard for me to find anything wrong with Safe as Milk. but I think now's the time to make it clear that I'm a complete nut (I think fanboy is the word metacritickers would use) for Trout Mask Replica. Loving the album for what it is even after reading about all the micromanaging BS that van Vliet piled on the band members, I can't say that he should have been reigned in.
That said, I wouldn't mind if someone kept somebody like Lou Reed on a leash (no Metal Machines for me).

How can you like Trout Mask Replica and not Metal Machine Music? I'm sure many here would highly disagree with me....but I think Metal Machine Music is by far the best thing Lou Reed ever did. I like it much better than The Velvet Underground records (although I like them quite a bit too). Although I think it has been established that I have a sweet-tooth for the atonal.

Two classic quotes from Lou himself regarding the album:
"Anyone who gets to side four is dumber than I am"
"I was serious about it at the time. I was also really, really stoned."

Do you ever just go to, like, a welding factory or something, and just sit back and listen to those sweet tones, JB?

I'll definitely second Gold Lion, old news as that is. I was so looking forward to it, and SO let down.
But I've noticed that no one seemed to mention Sonic Youth's Rather Ripped. Hear me out: I adore this band more than any other active band, but I have a hard time picking out even one track that I'd put on a mix, and I pretty much gave up listening to it after the 3rd time.
I liked "Rather Ripped" rather well (har har). In fact, it might be the best studio work from SY I've ever heard. "Dirty" and "Daydream Nation" and their other supposed classics did nothing for me on record. Live is a different story altogether, of course.

Of course, I'm glad that people like it, because Sonic Youth deserves recognition. But for me, I realized I'd probably never get into Rather Ripped when I heard it live. Disappointing. Could be that they are just getting old for it, but when they did the songs from Confusion Is Sex, they were badass again. The Rather Ripped material was rather tame live, IMO.

The Goo double-disc reissue is where it's at.
I have got to get my hands on this. Goo is my favorite SY album, even if it's not their best.

Sorry - sometimes I'm a little slow. So why do I like Trout Mask Replica more than Metal Machine Music?
Short answer: Fast 'N' Bulbous. I could (and do on occasion) utter those sounds many times a day and not be sick of them.
Real answer: I appreciate atonal music, and sometimes I even enjoy it. But if I want to hear really audacious atonality, it's much easier to listen to the construction work that mowed down the philosophy offices for parking (sorry - I'm a little bitter). And listening to one's environment is less predictable.
Trout Mask Replica is more traditional, but I think it's also multifaceted (depth of concept is something MMM lacks). It has fractured storylines that seem like they could make sense in an alternate universe (but don't in this one), plus the backstory of Van Vliet Gone Wild on the naive asses of some poor young rockers. I think innovation/noise is essential, but my heart is really in the grey area between the avant-garde bourgeois and the poppy proles (a bit closer to the bourgeois if you want to split hairs).
Now here's where I might go off...
There is a principle of sufficient reason in operation with regards to (I've been leaning on that phrase as of late so pls bear with me) any recorded sound. In other words - something(s) caused any given sound to sound as it does. Now this guiding force/source might be heavy machinery or it might be the unorthodox (to say the least) psyche of an autistic control freak. I feel that there is more mystery, empathy and (mayyyybe) downright shock in the latter than the former.
EDIT: After all that hot air, I can no longer say that I dislike Metal Machine Music. That's one thing actually listening to music can do for you...
A few solid tracks but MAN, is there some crap on there....love "Beach Chair," though - maddest props to Chris Martin on that one...whole album should've been like that

You must not have like the Unicorns. I think Islands took everything that Unicorns did and made it sound bigger, better and more cohesive. So many awesome melodies on that album and a tour/live show that gives a big bitch-slap to bands of the same calibre.
Islands was one of my favorites. To each their own, I know. Maybe you should give it another try. I think the drumming/rythm are surprisingly tight.
My most dissappointing was At War with the Mystics. I think it's all right on it's own, but doesn't even compare to bulletin and yoshimi....that's not to say it's the worst, just below my expectations.

My most disappointing album was The Dears - Gang of losers. The second half of the album is interesting, but the first half is kind of repetitive. I can't understand how people can put a perfect score on a record like that.
In fact, some CDs sounds like "album of the year" but that's what makes an album with a lack of subtility. The special records with a particular production are the ones that should really be "album of the year", like "A ghost is born", "good news...", "white blood cells", "is this it?" etc.
