I just saw the list. Jesus...
No, I'm only joking. I really like that list. Refreshingly free of the big 3 (he says despite having TVOTR as his number 1). I see what you mean about me slating your number 2 & 3 choices (oops, sorry bout that!) but your list actually had an effect on me when I saw it a few days back.
1) It convinced me to get the Drive-by Truckers album (I like) and
2) Gave me cause to dig out Southern Harmony (I only have Moneymaker on vinyl - my record player being 150 miles away) which I don't do nearly enough. Love that album.
It's nice to see Shack on your list. Brilliant album, from a band that are consistently brilliant. I saw them live earlier this year. They were top, as always.
Baby Dayliner is on my "to get" list.
Hope that makes up for me trashing Hecker and the Peppers.

jeez TRUC, chill yer boots. You're right, actually, it was a bit of a barb, sorry if I offended your sensibilities by daring to suggest a disagreement with another forummer. I know plenty of people who can't cope with Ys because it sounds so different to their usual Radio 1 diet. Doubtless if all I ate was beans-on-toast people would suggest I try new things too, but I don't think I'd go on a mentalist rant about the great offence such a suggestion caused me. "I KNOWS WHAT I LIKES AND I LIKES BEANS-ON-TOAST!"
PS If you think people only listen to old music for street cred, may I cordially suggest you may be mistaken. But heaven forfend I may upset you: please, accept my gracious apologies in advance and understand that is not my intention. Can we put all this behind us?

I think you might have wanted to read my first EDIT before charging in with the "clueless" and "asinine," but alright. I didn't realize no one can hold an opinion unless "those with a clue in the Hip-hop community" (who knew there was a 'Hip-hop community' in Ireland?) agree with it.
EDIT: Decided this was as good a post as any to thank RL. You waded through 1000+ posts to compile this list and that's a task no man or woman could envy. Bravo.
I did read your edit, and I wasn't debating with you but TRUC.Sorry for not making myself clearer. However that Irish remark is rather cheap. There is indeed a Hip-Hop scene in Ireland, and two strong ones in nearby Great Britain and France.Asking any Hip-Hop fan from any country as to what status the RZA holds in Hip-Hop and you'll hear the words 'legend' etc. Thats barely debateable.

haaaang on a sec. rest of wu-tang meant to me the individual members who we heard of occasionally but kinda blew it. mainly method man, ODB to some extent, who seemed to coast on the name alone and kept himself in the limelight by being crazy and arrested. inspectah deck had the largest fall out of them though. no disrespect intended towards wu-tang or rza, obviously.

Did you repeat this becuase you thought it was funny? How rude. Possibly the worst thing I've read on this forum.
Yes, I repeated this because I thought it was funny. I meant it as a comment on how silly these discussions can sometimes get. People seemed to get worked up about the smallest comments.
In retrospect, I can see where the term "retarded" could be viewed as disrespectful to both the handicapped and the participants in the discussion. If I have offended anybody, I apologize.

I was part of the whole geezer v. kids debate thing, and I don't think anybody really got worked up. Maybe you just weren't part of it so you were skimming over, but I don't think anyone really put that much effort into it until it got to the "people listen to older music for cred" v. "people listen to older music to find forgotten gems" debate, which when I stopped reading because I found a certain sid to be totally ignorant (but sometimes misquoted and opinions skewed by the oposing party).
Anyways, these debates tend to be friendly w/ the occasional out of place remark.
I just want to point out that all of the people that are still talking about this and simply beating a dead horse all barely joined in December or have less than 100 posts--some fit into both of these categories. Let's get over it and talk about music, please.

This is an interesting list matta, I haven't heard the Nas album yet, but I might check it out now. Can you recommed any tracks to sample or tell me what is so great about it? Is it the lyrics, beats, production? Also liked your inclusion of Ghostface Killah, The Roots, Lupe Fiasco, Outkast, and Clipse.

I have little to add to the fogies vs. whippersnappers debate, except to say that if you think three discs of Tom Waits leftovers is one the best albums of 2006, your opinion is wrong. I know your mother told you opinions are never wrong, but in this case, it is very, very wrong.
This is a very bold statement dude. Orphans did extremely well in spite of three strong factors against it: - It was the last serious release of the year (late November), so plenty of people did not get it and listen to it on time - It is a triple CD and quite an expensive one, again many people did not buy it yet for this reason - Many members who loved the album decided that it does not qualify as it contains several tracks not previously released
Amongst the user who did buy it I have hardly read about anybody who did not like it and when it was inserted in a list it was generally in the top three positions.
And yes, Tom Waits' leftovers are still good enough to make a best of the year CD, although I don't know what your mother told you

Great list everybody! It looks like I have a lot to check out, considering only 5 from my top ten made the top 40. As a result of this forum, I've put a few things on my "To Listen" list.
Thanks RL for putting this together.

Feel free to trash Stadium... whenever you like. I think I might be the only regular poster on here who actually likes that album. Hecker's isn't the sort of music I usually listen to but I really dug it when I heard it.
Shack's album is a pearler. I'd never heard them before but I play it a lot.
Can I tempt you to try White Bread Black Beer? It's far and away my album of the year.

The bummer for me is, I only own 7 of the albums on the top 40. I'm really going to have to pay more attention this year.
I found it pretty startling that I own 18 off of the top 40 including The Roots, Thom Yorke, Neko Case, The Knife, Yo La Tengo, M. Ward, and two-thirds more. I guess that means that I reign supreme over everybody huh?

All the hubbub back a few pages just reiterates a recent concern (echoed by a few long-time members) that these Forums have devolved into a whole lot of pointless sniping and personal attacks. I won't pretend that I've never sniped or taken personal shots, but I've tried to do it sparingly. There are quite a few folks here who simply want to, very smugly, take shots at what other people like. Several Forum regulars have expressed their concern (or have simply left) with the current state of 'discussion' and I concur. I'm not going to play the "you're gonna miss me" card because, honestly, the people who live to make others feel small so they can make themselves feel big won't care. But more than a few of the Forum regulars (mostly the old fogeys) have set up shop elsewhere, and I think that's indicative of the kind of discourse that's becoming more common here. Maybe that's just the evolution of these Forums, and maybe it's best that the dinosaurs go retire elsewhere. Most of you, in the end, won't care if some of the folks who have been posting here for two or three years stay or go. But maybe you should think twice before you shit all over someone else's favorite record just to show how much smarter or cleverer or more musically aware you are than they.
While I'm going to continue to moderate as much as I can (most of the time, all that means is clearing out spam postings), I'm not going to be actively participating on the Forums much anymore. If you seem a spam post or have something that needs to be moderated, PM me.
