my.02 on the subject at hand:
i read/post on these formus to get recommendations from people who share similar musical interests. i enjoy rap/hip hop to an extent, but i'm just not exposed to the genre very much and i rarely seek it out.
that said, i put WAY more stock into Carlito's Way's hip-hop choices than to most of the other posters. i'd rather take a recommendation from somebody who listens to the genre extensively than from somebody like me who just checks out what the critics are hailing. i don't know crap about rap or hip hop, so why should i trust someone who only lists one album in their top 20? if CW doesn't like Clipse, maybe he hasn't listened to it or maybe he just thinks it's entry-level stuff (not to put words in your mouth, Carlito -- if that really IS your real name).
just a thought.

Did you listen to anything else this year besides rap/hip-hop? Half of these albums (2Pac, Ras Kass, Dilated Peoples, The Game and Busta Rhymes) are poor albums not just in the music community's eyes but also the rap community's eyes as well. I have heard zero talk about the Boot Camp Clik album though. And for a list that only has one genre, how can you not have Clipse anywhere and The Roots at the very bottom?

You weren't asking, you were insulting him. Wouldn't it be better to say "hey, I notice you listen to a lot of hip-hop. Can I ask why you included The Game but not Clipse?"

I believe if you asked like that you wouldn't get such a backlash. It's one thing to ask questions, it's another thing to criticize someone and throw a question at the end. It's antagonizing.

I unfortunately had to cut my number of cd purchases down and M. Ward was one I had to put off buying. I'm dissappointed too. Bob Dylan, Cat Power and Tom Waits didn't make my budget cut either. There's only so much record-buying dough in my wallett. Oh well, I plan on making much more money next year.

FKA, like me, has trouble in the way he phrases things. I screw up with it, so does leland. Its ok. We all do (but especially us three Musketeers).

To keep the peace in Dodge, let's just ask FKA nicely to use the edit button more than usual.

EDIT: I do it more than I'd like to admit...

FragileKidA, you have to understand people have different ears. You also have to understand that if "99% of the hiphop community" (do you mean Metacritic Community?) thought Food & Liquor kicked motherhugging ass it doesn't mean Carlito's Way himself thinks it's a big hit. If you notice carefully my list does NOT match any of the big hits you see on the home page of MetaCritic (those ones with review scores of over 75). Why? Because number 1, I don't like their sound. Number 2, I don't have to conform. I've been posting on these forums for a year now and I've always been attacked for my non-conformism because I don't listen to indie, alt, and rock like everyone else here. FragileKidA, if you disagree with my list because my list doesn't conform to the opinion of the majority of the rap community, then I'd have to say that you are just like everyone else on this board who has attacked me in the past. I'm used to it.

I reiterate: I don't have to listen to what the rap community thinks I should listen to. Which rap community (??? The dirty south? New York? L.A.? Toronto?) you're referring to, by the way, is completely beyond me.

Pac's Life was weak? Hmm... I beg to differ. Tupac as an MC was never weak to me. Nothing can change that from my perspective. God bless his soul.

Regarding Clipse. Straight up front answer to your question: I don't like their sound. It totally makes sense coz I'm not a big fan of their colleagues either, The Neptunes. Why, you ask? Coz I don't like their sound. Simple. The Roots (BORING!)? Hell I was actually gonna forget about Game Theory and put J Dilla's Donuts as number 10, but I thought hey, I don't think I should put 2 albums by the same artist in the top 10. I honestly thought Donuts would have easily been a stronger album than Game Theory.

I'm sorry if I'm not a slave to conformism. Imagine if I was? I'd put Fishscale at number 1! But no, I thought The Shining and Pac's Life were stronger albums.

Do I listen to anything besides hip hop/rap? Hmmm... lemme think... Marginally. I have about 15 gigs of music on my harddrive. The breakdown would be something like this: 65% rap, 20% miscellaneous mix of soul/r&b, and the remaining 15% would be an eclectic blend of other genres. So to answer your question, no I don't listen to much else besides hip hop. Although I was listening to some catchy song by The Fray the other day (it's my niece's fault, she absolutely abhors hiphop; she left my winamp running with that song playing when she used my laptop the other day). However, I don't think I'm reprehensible if the staggering majority of my music is what it is; most of the people here listen to only indie and rock, they're guilty of the same thing. I might as well represent.

Do you really think that your list must have the records that pulled the most talk out of people? If I were to follow that rule I should have put Jay-Z on top! That fuckin album sold nearly three quarters of a million copies on its first week! Everyone was talking about it. Did I put it on number 1? No.

I don't mean no disrespect FragileKidA, hope this doesn't offend you, but maaa-aan, the tone with which you asked me... well.

Peace.

I'm out.

P.S. Señor Marky, sorry if I perhaps got derailed (again?) from the main topic, but FKA's tone was clear from the get go, so I'm just being, you know...Carlito's Way.\\

P.P.S. Propz to all of youse who got my back. I won't forget you (tears).

I love Donuts... but I think I love Game Theory even more.

No complaints with your list though. It's refreshing to see so much hip-hop in a top ten! It's a breath of fresh air Smiler

Just because someone

  • Critiques one's taste
  • Does not agree with one's taste
does not mean that said critiquer is attacking or taking personal shots at whomever is being critiqued.

All too often, we see overall productive and important members have squabbles about, essentially nothing save a difference in personal tastes.

Before getting defensive, we should all consider whether the offender is calling you a lard-based-chowderhead or just saying that they like Clipse more than you.

Having said that, I would just like to add that you are all lard-based-chowderheads.

Nice use of the bulletpoint option for no reason, Mike. Big Grin

Its an important point that needs to be made.

Though there's a fine line between constructively "critiquing" taste and destructively criticizing it. The line is crossed positively or negatively by the careful wording of your statement.
