Hi all. New to the forum. 1. The Crane Wife- The Decemberists 2. The Life Pursuit- Belle and Sebastian 3. Boys and Girls in America- The Hold Steady 4. Gulag Orkester- Beirut 5. Return to the Sea- Islands 6. Rabbit Fur Coat- Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins 7. And the Glass Handed Kites- Mew 8. Return to Cookie Mountain - TV on the Radio 9. With Love and Squalor- We Are Scientists 10. The Body, The Blood and the Machine- The Thermals Followed by new releases by Wilderness, Sunset Rubdown, Beast Moans, The Raconteurs, The Flaming Lips. My question? Why no love (relatively) for the Decemberists, here, or in critics lists?

I loved Sibylle Baier's Colour Green album. Since the music was recorded during the early '70s, I left it off my list, along with other reissues or older music first seeing a release, such as Karen Dalton and Selda Bagcan. Maybe there should be a 'best of' list on the forums just for this type material.

Just a reminder that we have a thread to post your final lists for Best Songs of 2006 too. I've notice a lot more action over here for the albums, and I just wanted to let you guys know the songs thread is getting jealous. Go post your lists!

I didn't pick up the Sibylle Baier till my list was done, and I'm not necessarily saying it would be in my top 20, but since it was never formally released in the 70s, or in any format since then, I have no problem with it being on someone's list now, the first year of its official release on any medium. It's not a reissue, just a long-delayed first release.

1. White Bread, Black Beer - Scritti Politti Streets ahead of any other '06 release I've heard. Memorably melodic track after memorably melodic track. The vibe of the album comes closest to "Because" and "Sun King" from Abbey Road, with a bit of UK Squeeze (circa Argy Bargy) thrown in for good measure ("Dr. Abernathy"). Beautiful and sustaining.
Hallelujah! Finally someone who agrees with my assessment of what is the Album of the Year! (See my list, posted on Jan. 2.)
I am surprised that this masterpiece is so underrated on these boards!!
That makes two of us, Peewee.. I'm less surprised that it isn't people's #1 than I am by the fact that it doesn't appear anywhere on most lists.

True dat, Raving, I guess I was thinking more about the national critics. I saw it on few top ten lists, and Pitchfork, Tiny Mix Tapes, CokeMachineGlow and others dissed in something awful during the end of the year lists. I seem to remember the critics liking it just fine at the time, but, like a one night stand, forgetting about it come the holidays!

Good list. I like most of the ones I know about here. The Islands didn't impress me as much as I thought as I found it uneven, but I'd give it a grade of B at least.
