Sideshow Bob, I'm sure crazed would know more about Demolition Doll Rods than I would, but, as far as I know, they play extremly sexed up, crazy, and fun "gurrrl power" punk rock that pretty much died with the 70's. The recently got off tour with the Cramps if that's any indication of there style. It's also a plus for them to have two really hot chicks in the band.
ok, I left a post earlier about bands that should be on these lists but aren't and overrated bands... but my main point was that Brazilian Girls - Talk to la Bomb isn't on anyones list. Does somebody have an explanation for this?

My reason is that I first heard of it about 30 seconds ago.

I'm only half way through this thread, but i'd like to say "thank you" to whomever listed "Man Man" and "Love is All", i've been lacking "fun" music for the last few months. So thanks again, i'm picking them up tomorrow.
BTW i'm hoping to gain 20 some posts in the next 11 days so i can add my year end list. Do you think it will happen?....I do.
Also, since i haven't caught up fully (and i'm new), has anyone added "Bound Stems-Appreciation Night" or "Architecture in Helsinki" to the Best of List? Just wondering...
(is there somewhere we can talk about new bands on this forum? because i haven't noticed a thread yet for that. Can someone point me in the right direction?
*Please be nice. I'm new...and also because I may be intoxicated.*

Quite right, (not certain about Surfer Rosa being quite on the level of the other 3). If you think about it none of Dark Side..., Pet Sounds or Kid A received shining reviews or big sales on their releases. I guess Ys may be one of those that the public will take a while to learn about and will eventually become one of those albums that the next generation will look at as one of the greats. But, its difficult to guess what the future will look back at as a defining point in the '00s. Maybe there's something we've all missed but in 20 years everyone will know about it.
In the middle of the year, i wrote in a post that there were a lot of disappointing albums so far, but the second half has been much better and it has turned into a pretty good year for music releases, I think.
Ok, here is THE official Stocky's Top 20 Albums of 2006:

Mogwai – Mr. Beast 16. M Ward – Post War 17. Tom Waits – Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards 18. Mono – You Are There 19. Sodastream – Reservations 20. Peaches – Impeach My Bush
And, for the record, here are 20 that didn't make it:
21. Bruce Springsteen – We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions 22. Cat Power – The Greatest 23. Loose Fur – Born Again In The USA 24. Sufjan Stevens – Songs for Christmas 25. Maybe the people here didn't love the Brazilian Girls enough to put them on their year end list?? Is that enough of an explanation?
It always amazing to me when someone seems to get mad at other people for not picking THEIR fave.
Also, at least one person, OnFire, had the record on their list here. But I don't see why WE have to justify the absence of YOUR favorite record on OUR lists.
You called my favorite record of 2006 'tollerable (sic) but nothing special' so I'll return the favor. I listened to the Brazilian Girls, and didn't care for it. Explanation enough?

here's my list for 2006. 1. Califone 2. Man Man 3. Mogwai 4. Regina Spektor 5. Cat Power 6. Adem 7. I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness 8. Midlake 9. Ali Farka Toure 10. Grizzly Bear
I think I've been a member long enough... but I guess we'll see.
You know what would be fun to see after the results are all compiled is a list of albums that only appeared on one persons list. Any chance that could happen down the line RL?
1) TV on the Radio - "Return to Cookie Mtn" 2) Built to Spill - "You in Reverse" 3) The Slip - "Eisenhower" 4) Beck - "The Information" 5) Muse - "Black Holes and Revelations" 6) Band of Horses - "Everything All the Time" 7) Gomez - "How We Operate" 8) M. Ward - "Post War" 9) Wolfmother - "Wolfmother" 10) Secret Machines - "Ten Silver Drops" 11) Thom Yorke - "The Eraser" 12) Black Keys - "Magic Potion" 13) Flaming Lips - "At War With the Mystics" 14) Comets on Fire - "Avatar" 15) the Raconteurs - "Broken Boy Soldier"

I'm planning on waiting until Jan. 15 to post the final one. It'll be at least a little bit of a surprise then
I guess I can wait for that....
And as for the lack of Brazilian Girls on top ten lists; I just chalk it up to not giving the record a chance. I read what people say what makes a record great... something new grabs you everytime you listen to it, it puts a smile on your face, got a good beat - you can dance to it, whatever.... Talk to La Bomb has all that. It's a more consistent record than their debut last year and do trust me, it's a grower. It took me a while to like them and then, all of a sudden, I just understood them... if that makes sense.
If anyone hasn't heard the Brazilian Girls, they are an extremely cosmopolitan sounding, TALENTED band with a multilingual female lead(she sings in five languages!) If you can picture a martini bar in Soho, this is the record that would be playing in it.

Did anyone actually hear The Animal Years by Josh Ritter this year? I haven't seen it on any lists (other than my own) - I'm seeing a lot of my other top 20 choices showing up on everyone else's lists, but not Ritter's. I have The Animal Years at #1. Anyone else heard it?

Very, very true. This makes me sad that the whole album isn't as good as this song or a few others on there.
Also, I can't get over just how good The Crane Wife is. I think that The Decemberists have finally made their best album and I hope they only get better from here. You have to love the first four songs--especially the second one--so much.
Crane Wife is damn fine. Does anyone know what happened with the green screen challenge thing with Steven Colbert versus the Decemberists? I thought the hype leading up to it was so funny, and then I think the holidays caused me to miss the actual thing...
1) The Hold Steady - Boys And Girls In America 2) NY Dolls - One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This 3) TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain 4) Bob Dylan - Modern Times 5) Tom Waits - Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards 6) Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers 7) Beck - The Information 8) Black Keys - Magic Potion 9) Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam
WAY Overlooked albums 2) Elbow - Leaders of the Free Worls Came out in the US this year, awesome album that isn't getting on any top tens.
well... correct me if i'm wrong, but most folks that frequent here probably picked up the Elbow album in '05. i know i did, and it was my second or third favorite album of 2005. come to think of it, i wasn't really aware the U.S. release was in 2006... ??? i know the Cardigans record suffered a similar lengthy delay...
The Elbow record got a limited release in US stores in 2005. It was an indie store exclusive late in '05, but got a wide release in '06.
And really...it wasn't nearly as good as the one prior to that one anyway...
