Um, this is the appropriate forum. How many posts in this thread have been non-lists? Well over 50%. I'd say my post fits right in with the rest of the banter in this thread.
Is it ok for me to say that I think this was a rather disappointing year for indie music and a banner year for rap/hiphop? I hope I don't offend any of the sensitive souls for that comment.
TVOTR and Hold Steady are good albums but they certainly aren't great. I just think indie fans have been waiting for that great "illinoise" of '06 that's just not there and decided to go with a couple of inferior yet solid albums. It's all good, and understandable.
although it won't count, i guess i'll make my list just to get it out of my head.
1. the blood brothers - young machetes 2. tv on the radio - return to cookie mountain 3. m. ward - post-war 4. ghostface - fishscale 5. band of horses - everything all the time 6. camera obscura - let's get out of this country 7. someone still loves you boris yeltsin - broom (i can't believe i haven't seen this on ANY list ONCE! great great pop album) 8. beach house - beach house 9. beirut - gulag orkestar 10. destroyer - destroyer's rubies 11. cunninlynguists - a piece of strange (one of the best hip-hop releases that's being overlooked) 12. islands - return to the sea 13. xiu xiu - the air force 14. cursive - happy hollow (a good cursive album is still a great album. i hope their next release will be of better caliber like 'domestica' and 'the ugly organ') 15. jenny lewis & the watson twins - rabbit fur coat 16. daedelus - denies the day's demise 17. sunset rubdown - shut up i am dreaming 18. tapes 'n tapes - the loon 19. yndi halda - enjoy eternal bliss 20. yppah - you are beautiful at all times (think of a more hyped up bonobo and the old dabrye)
can't say this is the final list though. decemberists final fantasy cat power tokyo police club & voxtrot EPs (if they could count) grizzly bear liars i feel bad for not putting that many electronic releases and many other good releases that i might have put in those last spots and taken a few of those off as well.

huh? It must be too subtle for my poor shock attuned senses.

Regardless of whether TVOTR or Hold Steady wins this year, there's still not an album on the list that's nearly as good as Sufjan's "Illinoise". imo.
Illinoise has some amazing songs/moments. But it's soooo bloated and stuffed with extraneous crap that somebody really should have taken out. Unlike the majority of contenders this year for the prize.
(Not to mention all the books he hit, which is about the most ass-backwards way to write a song ever.)
Somebody already quoted Regina Spektor on this (m.leland perhaps?) - "you can write... but you can't edit." And despite all the soft pop affectations that make it difficult for me to fall for her, she's right on the button about that.

First, it would probably be better off for you if you stopped worrying so much. Some people have an uncanny talent for getting offended.
But I am a bit confused by what you would call a banner year. Does that mean a large quantity of good releases? Or the ones that were good were REALLY good? Or both? Cos on most lists I've seen either indie outnumbers hip-hop or they're almost even. It might also help if I could see your list.
If you are so hung up on Illinoise, it makes sense that you might be disappointed with 2006. I, on the other hand, am more a fan of surprises than anything. and I think '06 had plenty of surprises.
1. Joanna Newsom – Ys 2. Thom Yorke – The Eraser 3. TV On The Radio – Return To Cookie Mountain 4. The Decemberists – The Crane Wife 5. Ghostface Killah – Fishscale 6. Tool – 10,000 Days 7. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Stadium Arcadium 8. The Roots – Game Theory 9. Gnarls Barkley – St. Elsewhere 10. Bonnie Prince Billy – The Letting Go 11. Beck – The Information 12. Nas – Hip Hop Is Dead 13. Where are all these newcomers coming from(1st posters). I didn't see quite this many last year, not even close. I know their lists won't count, but just wondering how they found this site at this time of the year....maybe they will indulge us. Anyway, at this rate, next year metacritic(if newcomers stay on site) will have to pay one of us to keep track of lists...lol

Of course, I could be wrong.
Yeah your post fits in with everything else here. I think that's what this forum is for: for people to post their lists and for people to comment on them--that can be in a negative and/or positive manner. There are a lot of people here that would die for indie music--if that is an official genre--so when you even say one little thing with the word indie in it, there could be a backlash. Some people love indie stuff even if it isn't that good; some people will even choose a mediocre indie albums (won't mention any albums from this year, although there are plenty) over a superior, solid hip-hop effort (also plenty from this year.) There could be tons of reasons for this but it could also be as simple as someone saying "I just don't like rap"--which is fine also. Anyways, you can say what you want but if someone gets offended or in many cases smart, it goes with the territory.
By the way, the album is titled Illinois not "Illinoise." And I do have to agree with nathanielkt that Joanna Newsom's album is probably the Illinois of this year.

3. You must have been a Metacritic forum member for at least two months or have 30 posts to be eligible. Anyone with fewer votes may post a list but will not be counted.

I don't understand why this rule has been enforced. Heaps of interesting lists will not be counted as a result. It all sounds elitist and indie-nazi-esque to me.

Do you know how many people sign in, post a list, and then never return? The whole idea is to count the lists of forum members, and those people can hardly be considered such.

Stocky, it is about participating. That is what a forum is - posting a couple times and then bounding off never to return is not participating on a forum.

I call it Illinoise because that's what's on the cover. Come on feel the 'Illinoise'. If you want to call it Illinois that's ok I guess, but Illinoise is what the cool, 'in the know' people call it. I have the illegal version with the superman on the cover. So that increases my indie cool points big time.
