Yeah, we didn't have a list in 2004, so we got added at the bottom last year.

just for the record, I had Lupe and Ghostface in my top 30, just not the top 20...

Maybe it's mildly under-represented, but we're only a few lists in...

You took a personal stand for hip-hop/rap/r&b not being represented fairly. If you were being fair you would have mentioned other overlooked genres as well.

That has nothing to do with race. You are the one bringing it up. I never said anything about having as many genres as possible in a list, I am defending rap/hip-hop because I feel that it does not deserve to be overlooked. That has nothing to do with people overlooking it because of race at all.

I buy a pretty fair amount of hip-hop, and I just feel 2006 was not a great year. There were a few releases I enjoyed, but I'm not sure I would label any of them standout. I may have one, maybe two in my top 20, but somewhere in the lower ten. We'll see about next year with Cannibal Ox, Madvillain, and DOOM & Ghostface among some of the expected.

Don't forget the highly anticipated OB4CL II from Raekwon next year.

One point that hasn't been made about hip-hop yet is that it's not really an album-oriented genre. Those that garner attention here are a few of the stronger full records, but for the most part hip-hop albums are built around a few singles with a lot of filler.

Correct me if I'm wrong, because I don't proclaim to be an expert on the genre, but that's my impression. That being said, Ghostface is a strong contender to make the back end of my top 20.

The reason that there was no Hip-Hop/Rap on my list is because I didn't buy any this year. I also didn't have TV on the Radio on my list because I didn't buy that either... (and who's to say I would have like it enough anyway). It doesn't mean I am prejudice against their music. I mean my bank account is only so big.

You're right. I spaced that one out.

Actually, I quite liked Futuresex/Lovesounds. It does take a big dive in the second half though, which is what's keeping it off my top 20 list. I also enjoyed Timbaland's other pop production from this year, Nelly Furtado's Loose. That actually may make my top 20.

One pop record this year I really really like is Ciara: The Evolution

I'll probably be the only one with at least one surf instrumental album in my list. Am I disappointed? Naw. More reverb for me!

I haven't seen much love for Asobi Seksu's Citrus other than myself (#2), which is fine, but don't let it be because you haven't heard it. Its an amazing shoegaze/pop album. It goes down easy unlike harsher shoegaze like Serena Manessh (which I also loved.) I was very close to making it my #1. My favorite track is The Red Sea which really showcases their unbelievable hypnotic warm wash of feedback and noise.

Eh, I listened to it, didn't care for it. I've never been a shoegaze guy though.

I liked it - but the first time I heard it, I was sick, so I can't really listen to it; the same thing happened with Marquee Moon, but I got over that - so who knows?

It made my top 60, I think, still...I love that Serena Maneesh album.
