Is there a thread up yet, where we list our favorite songs of the year? I'm curious what songs are going to be named the most, hopefully not all Hold Steady songs in the top 10.

Thanks, RL. 2006 was a good year for music as far as I'm concerned. Not as top-heavy as 2005--just solid across the board. Of course, right after I posted my list I grabbed the new Alohas and the new Annuals, both of which might've cracked the bottom half of my Top 20. Oh well.... I discovered Shack through one of crazed's posts in the Best of 2006 thread. They're a brit band (2 brothers) that's been around for awhile, and The Corner of Miles & Gil was released on Noel Gallagher's label this year. I haven't heard any of their older albums. It's good, unpretentious, indie rock/pop. Nothing that really breaks any musical boundaries, but I think you can still make a good record without trying to redefine music in each note. Regardless, the album really stuck with me.

This is impossible. I have a list of about 30 albums that I really really like and beyond the first three I have no idea what order to put them in. It seems like it changes daily. Maybe I'll just post my top 3

Commmon HOLD STEADY!!!!!!!! I would be so happy for this to win. TV on the Radio is excellent, but I am very suspicious of it being so popular, because it certainly isn't an easy album to listen to all the way through. I actually sequenced it differently and made it a better listen, IMO. HOLD STEADY!!!
note to newbies who posted Boys and Girls on their list: there is still plenty of time to gain those 30 posts!!!
I'll be posting my list January 15th, of course.

I'm SO putting The Hold Steady at #1. Even if it truly is just outside of my top ten. I'll factor in their amazing live show to make myself feel better about it.
Sorry folks, but TVOTR was such rubbish. Having that at the top is a travesty. I'm not going to complain about other people's picks or whatever, music is all in the ear of the beholder. However, I will be a sneaky bastard and try and strategize Hold Steady to the top. Hey, the rules don't say we can't.
Just post an honest list. Putting The Hold Steady at #1 just to piss off TV on the Radio fans is a little irrational. I'd be surprised if your list gets counted at all now.

Agreed. While it's nice to see the Hold Steady at #1, since it's a little more of a surprise than TVOTR, everybody ought to just make honest lists. Honest lists are more fun to read than lists that are trying to affect the outcome of the final tally. I think one of the main reasons people read these are to learn about music they may have missed out on throughout the year.

Yeah, I hope you're not serious about that, Casper. Maybe I wasn't as comprehensive as I should've been on the rules, but I think it's just common sense that you should post an honest list.

I'm about 95% sure Casper is just joking. I hope so, anyway.
I don't really care if TV on the Radio or The Hold Steady win. I think they're both very good and deserving albums. I'd just like to see Liars place highly because I adore Drum's Not Dead. Seems like it could end up in the top 5, which is cool.

I loved their debut. When did this come out, I hadn't even heard of it yet.
It came out in late October or November in the UK. It was scheduled for March '07 US release, but got bumped. It should come out in the US in 2007, but you can find really cheap imports out there. Mine cost me less than $14, shipping included.

The Head brothers were originally in the Pale Fountains and have made records as Shack and as The Strands for a while now. The Corner of Miles and Gil just missed my Top 20, and probably because I just haven't gotten to listen to it as much as I should.
mejis hits the nail on the head: it's pretty striaghtforward Brit-pop, but very melodic and well-crafted. The Shack record HMS Fable is one of the great unappreciated Britpop records. Check it out, RL. I think you might like it.

Leland and I were talking about this in another thread. Even though I enjoy it, I think the sequencing sucks. They put the weakest songs near the front of the album, and they put two long slow songs back-to-back at the end. Tim Rutili of Califone said they sequenced Roots & Crowns using Tarot cards. I'm not sure what random method TVotR used.

I plan on going to the music store in the next day or so. I will probably buy two albums, but I have a long list of albums to choose from. Throw forth your two cents.
Albums I'm considering:
The Beatles - Love (huge Beatles fan) M. Ward - Post War Cat Power - The Greatest Grizzly Bear - Yellow House (how would this compare to Sung Tongs?) Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped Ghostface Killah - Fishscale (Loved Game Theory, hated Food and Liquor) I'm From Barcelona (are they just like Polyphonic Spree?) Midlake - Trials of Van Occupanther (no idea about this band) Beirut - Gulag Orkestar (or these guys)
Wow, I guess I shouldn't have posted my year end yet. Sorry to put this question in this thread. I simply thought it is the best way to get some quick responses. Thanks!

All four of those are good. I think the Midlake starts off strong and gets weak near the end, but Beirut and IFB are both solid all the way through. (Beirut is strangely charming, and IFB is just straight folky pop) I've only listened to Fishscale once, but as a not-huge rap fan, I really liked it.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.

A little bit of me dies every time you say this, since "Province" and "Playhouses" are easily my favorites on the album. Especially when you or leland said the songs weren't "energetic"........ "Playhouses" isn't energetic?? WTH??? Have you heard that drumbeat?
