I'm glad 2005 was so good in terms of the amount of quality records released, because 2006 so far has been sub par. I can't remember if it's usually the case that by this time of year (midway through March), there really hasn't been one OUTSTANDING album released yet. I can think of a couple of disappointing ones, though:
1.) Mogwai Mr. Beast 2.) Hard-FI Stars of CCTV 3.) Tapes 'n' Tapes The Loon (I think this came out in '05, but who really heard it last year?)
Now, this is only disappointing to me because I thought, at least by reading the reviews, I would really enjoy them. I only found them "okay", with a couple of good songs mixed with filler.
Okay, I'm pathetic, I know (both in quoting myself and changing my position), but the Tapes N Tapes album as grown on me in the last two months or so, to the point that I actually like it more than 70% of the other albums I bought this year. There's at least 6 or 7 songs that I enjoy this record. And what's funny is, they were the whole reason in starting the "Most Disappointing album of 2006" thread. This is why I don't like making conclusive judgments on an album until like 3 months after I've owned it, for shit like this.

1. Isobell Cambell and Mark Lanegan - some disagree, and the reviews have been fine, but I didn't like this at all.

I didn't like Tapes 'n' Tapes but I wasn't exactly geared up for that release so I can't call it disappointing. Same with Jenny Lewis. I thought Hard-Fi's album was pretty good.

As for this thread, I guess the Flaming Lips because that was really the only release I've had my hopes up for, though it wasn't all that bad.

i would like to ay to hudson that the new flaming lips album is not dissapointing if anything they may be improving if thats possible on Yoshimi. the two albums that i am dissapointed on are the Arctic Monekys Richard Ashcroft

I think Tapes 'n Tapes are like Wolf Parade but not quite as good. I still like The Loon a lot, though.

I don't think Tapes N' Tapes sound remotely like Wolf Parade, unless you mean in the way that they're both indie rock bands. I do hear a little Pavement and Pixies influence.
The Loon is a great record though. It's the only record I've heard this year that stands a chance of making my end-of-year top 20 (I haven't heard the entire Lanegan/Campbell album, but I'd say it has a shot based on the strength of last year's Ramblin' Man EP).

I don't know if anything has really disappointed me in 2006, because I've not had high hopes on much. I think my biggest 'eh' moment is the Jenny Lewis record, which has smoe nice moments but is mostly just OK. Because I loved More Adventurous so much, I guess I hoped for more.
Personally, I wasn't disappointed (as others were) by Arctic Monkeys (I didn't expect them to be godhead but just fun and they were!) or Richard Ashcroft. I've been enjoying the Hard-Fi record since last year, and I still enjoy it this year. I'm going to see them on Thursday...

By no means an awful record, but it wasn't of the stuff NME made it out to be.
You're right. I made the comment when it first came out that if you manage to overlook the hype, it's a very decent record. Unfortunately, I think the overhype killed it for a lot of people.

Hello Philosopher Eric, I was wondering what you thought of the Hard-Fi show. I saw them in February in this total stripmall bar in Tempe. A buddy and I drove nine hours one way to catch them open for some lame local band (Zero Authority.) Sorry for being entirely off-topic.
