The Best of 2006 thread hasn't been as helpful to me for finding leads as it was last year because..well, everybody mentions a dozen records and everybody mentions different records.

So...this might be easier. Name three albums this year I should check out, and I will try to find samples from any multiple mentions.

How do we know what you've already heard?

Bruce Springsteen The Seeger Sessions
eels with strings: live at town hall (especially the DVD version)
Alejandro Escovedo The Boxing Mirror (I think you've "heard" it, but it's worth several more "listens"; the lyrics are multi-dimensional and chilling, while the music is both newish and great old-fashioned rock 'n' roll; MOR it ain't!)

"Naked Woman, Naked Man
Where did you get that nice sun tan?"

I think I know pretty much what Bob's heard. Anyways, I've got 4, but two of them are 3-song EP's.

1. Ms John Soda - Notes and the Like. Electronic pop, you know the deal.

2. Encre - Encre A Kora EP. The 3 tracks are all titled "Dogma, Africana & Math Folk," and that describes it pretty well. It's kind of disjointed instrumental folk music using African instruments I think. I don't really think it's authentic African music, and the band is French I think. Anyways, great stuff.

3. Thee Stranded Horse - Thee Stranded Horse EP. This is a side project of the Encre guy, and it's again some kind of crazy African folk music, this time with vocals and slightly more pop-oriented. Very good. I hope he comes out with the full-length soon.

4. Ladyhawk - Ladyhawk. Straight-up rock from Jagjaguwar. I only just heard it today, but I think it'll rank high by the end of the year.

2. Built to Spill-"you in reverse"
3. Snow Patrol-"eyes open"

Set 2

1. Gnarls Barkley-"st. elsewhere"
2. Mellowdrone-"box"
3. Grandaddy-"just like the fambly cat"

Speaking of thread ratings, how in the heck do you rate a thread? I just tried to find out, and I have no idea.

Well if you haven't heard them, I recommend:

1. Twilight Singers - Powder Burns
2. Phoenix - It's Never Been Like That
3. Murder By Death - In Bocca Al Lupo

Taylor Hawkins and the Coatail Riders-S/T
Brian Vander Ark-Angel,Put Your Face On

Give those a try, and see what you think.

Bob, did you like the Walkmen's prior two releases? If so, I would recommend A Hundred Miles Off, despite the spotty reviews.

Re: The Walkmen. I haven't heard the new one but I felt their second album didn't really cover anything that their first album didn't, so I'm not very interested in hearing this new one.

I'm serious here:

Asobi Seksu - Citrus
