Considering the amount of reviews for certain records and lack of reviews for others, and the weighted average system for scoring I personally don't feel that anything above a 70 is a bad score. I look at scores here the same way I look at scores on Pitchforkmedia though. I consider anything receiving at least a 70 to be arguably good. While I personally would've liked to see higher scores for Silent Shout and Drum's Not Dead as well, it doesn't affect my high opinion of them anymore than seeing a high score for Sufjan Stevens and knowing that no amount of praise will change my opinion about how ignorable I find his music. Look at it this way, even Kid A has a metascore in the 70's and there are many other records from this decade with way higher metascores that have definitely not had the same impact.

Looking at the amount of sources that review an album is a pretty important factor when taking into account the metacritic score. The albums at the extreme ends of the spectrum typically tend to have fewer reviews. I looked at the 2006 top 25 the other week, and most of the albums that were getting really high scores had less than 15 review sources. It stands to reason that the more critics that review an album, the more average a score is going to get, unless you really manage to release an album that's universally beloved or hated like TV on the Radio or Moby's Hotel.

Taking Stuff scoring in the low 70s or worse...
Eyes Open - Snow Patrol - Shamelessly commercial, but absolute ear candy.
Stadium Arcadium - RHCP - A lot of filler, but about 8 of these songs are simply great.
10,000 Days - Tool - Not as strong as last two, but still consistent and I'm just a sucker for their trance metal sound. Only real complaint - best and worst moments on the album are in the same song "Rosetta Stoned"
We are the Pipettes - Nothing Earth Shattering, but they harmonize really well.
New York Dolls - Some Day it Will Please us to Remember Even This - Very solid collection of Good Not Great Stonesy Punk Rockers.

I don't understand the hate for Kasabian's Empire. I really loved it, to me it's one of the year's best -- but a 62, with some reviewers going as low as 0?

Islands - Return to the Sea is rated way too low. That's just all there is to it. Remember this album? I still listen to it a lot.
The Thermals' 77 is a little low, but to be expected. If you haven't heard this, it's pretty sick.
The Pipettes' 66 is way too low.
Grizzly Bear's 79 should probably be an 85.
But this is pointless I guess. I can't make Q and Mojo and Blender and RS have good taste.

I agree. It is very good. But on the other hand, I think I remember that all Fiery Furnaces albums have quite low meta-scores.

The only good one, Gallowsbird's Bark, has something in the 70s.

Well, I thought it was pretty damn awful...but I agree it should have been on Metacritic. Both Iron & Wine EPs made it.

I thought EP had it's moments. "Evergreen" was a pretty good example of what the band is capable of if they stopped trying to be so difficult.

That's easily my least favorite album of theirs. quote: quote: Originally posted by RavingLunatic: Yeah, but EP would've gotten a high Metascore, probably around 80 I would guess. It really should've been on Metacritic considering that at 10 songs and over 40 minutes, it was basically a full album.

Yeah well... I just like how they have a style uniquely theirs. Sure, it's not for everyone (as illustrated beautifully throughout these forums), but I like how adventurous and playful their music is. I actually find them to be getting better, with Blueberry Boat being quite overrated IMHO while Rehearsing My Choir and (especially) Bitter Tea are extremely underrated. I'd prefer anything by them over nearly all of the indie stuff that seems to flood these forums.

And I don't think 74 is a low score, just not a good one. It is slightly above average though.
My thoughts exactly. (And sadly, it's gone down to 73.) I consider the low 70s only a little above average, good, but nothing to get too excited about. Although this year, most of my favorite albums have been in that 70-80 range. (Such as Liars, The Knife, Grizzly Bear, Beirut, and Oneida.) And I agree with Grizzly Bear deserving a higher rating. It was good where it started, in the mid-80s.

I bought it the Tuesday it was released, heard it and thought it was ok—liked their previous two albums a lot more. Heard it on and off and growing on me with each listen. Now, for the past week I have been listening to it a lot and I really do like it. I feel that The Strokes' First Impressions of the Earth is a solid album. It has plenty of standout tracks (about 8) and some really nice musical moments in it. Granted, it may not be as strong as their previous two, I still think Room on Fire is their best album, but this will probably be in my top ten. I think it’s different and unique and a lot better than 2006 releases from rock mainstreamers like The Killers, Jet, Audioslave, Evanescence, and AFI—whom are all wildly overrated—to name a few. I completely agree with Filter when they wrote that this is “a solidly good, if not great, effort from a solidly great, not just good, rock band."
