Flaming Lips and especially Snow Patrol, which doesn't possess an ounce of cool or integrity but musically sounds fantastic.
Can't Agree on Tool though, I think it's a huge failure.

First Impressions of Earth by The Strokes. The reviewers definantly only listened to this CD once. They should learn that with any Strokes CD it takes at least 3 to 5 listens before you'll get it. Besides its probably the only album this year by a band who knows how to please the ear and also play great music at the same time. I like every song and you'll like it to if you take time to appreciate it

I agree Mogwai is better than some say. To those speculating, give it a few listens. The Fiery Furnaces Bitter Tea has a few songs I wish I could delete, but think it carrries their best songs ever!! Electric President won't blow you away but is unique enough. Top 20 maybe by year's end. Try it. Oh...and for Raving Lunatic ....because it could mean anything lol

It's not so much that it's "bad," per se, it's just pointless. They've done everything on that record better already. Post-rock was new(ish) when they hit the scene, and to hear so little growth is a little disconcerting. My Father, My King was great; Happy Songs was at the very least emblematic of good post-rock. I hate the cliché, but they're treading water with Mr. Beast.

Who isn't treading water though? Precious few methinks. I've come around a bit on Mr. Beast, though I don't think it measures up to Rock Action or Happy Songs For Happy People. Then again, I'm kinda new to post-rock, so maybe I just haven't reached the point where you become numb to everything that's not well above average. Basically, with regard to post-rock, I'm not (yet) a jaded curmudgeon like leland.

Isn't that kind of like 'Best Tasting Shit of the Year'?

To the typical Hoosier with the inability to discern the difference between good and bad in any genre, sure...
To the rest of us, no.

I bought the CD the day it came out and just thought it was mediocre, but after I saw them in concert the songs seem to make a lot more sense. The middle third of that CD contains the best songs they've ever wrote: (All Hands and The Cook, Lost In Boston, Come On Over Here, Tenley Town) Good stuff. And does anybody get the life of a sailor/crewman theme of the album?
Yes, seeing these guys live last week made me like the new songs a lot more. They're one of the best live bands I've seen in quite a while. While I'm here... It's far from his best work, but Frank Black's "Fastman/Raiderman" is much better than the reviews would indicate. I tend to discredit any reviews that insist on comparing his newer stuff to albums he made almost 20 years ago.
