Tom Waits – Road To Peace
The Decemberists – Sons and Daughters
TV On The Radio – Wolf Like Me

A few notes. First, I struggled with this list. I hadn’t realized how many good songs were released this year, and when it came time to narrow down the list to 30, I often felt that my decision to cut certain songs was arbitrary (or, at minimum, was not based on terribly worthy criteria). Among the other songs I thought were equally deserving of inclusion on my list were Gnarles Barkley, “Just A Thought,” Niko Case, “The Needle Has Landed,” Comets On Fire, “Sour Smoke,” Califone, “A Chinese Actor,” Yo La Tengo, “The Room Got Heavy,” Ghostface Killah, “Shakey Dog,” Calexico “Panic Open Strings,” Camera Obscura, “If Looks Could Kill,” Flying Canyon, “In The Reflection,” Various Prod., “Circle of Sorrow,” and Justin Timberlake, “SexyBack.” There are others, as well.

Second, some songs were excluded either because they were on my list of best songs from 2005 (e.g., Gnarles Barkley’s “Crazy”) or because I haven’t had sufficient exposure to them, since they are officially released in the U.S. next year (e.g., Peter Bjorn and John’s “Young Folks”).

Third, the list is in (rough) alphabetical order. I didn’t attempt to rank order the songs. If I had, I think the top six would have been “Wolf Like Me,” “Sons and Daughters,” “Chillout Tent,” “Strange Apparition,” “Roscoe,” and “Silent Shout.” Tom Waits’ “If I Have To Go” would also be in that mix, but I’m not sure if it is one of the new songs on Orphans, so I suppose I would have to hedge my bet.

Is that list on the 1st page current? As you may know I'm pulling for Roscoe, but overall that is still a pretty darn good list.

SK's was the last list counted, so there's a few more I need to count. While "Roscoe" has been doing better than I expected, it's going to be tough to beat "Wolf Like Me" and "Crazy". One or both have been popping up on nearly every list.

I know. Just happy to see it doing this well. I think I'm one of the few who actually prefers I was a Lover to Wolf Like Me. Hard to argue with Crazy though.

We started the rule last year for a couple of reasons:

1. It ensures the integrity of the compiled list by making it more difficult for people to create multiple IDs and post multiple times. By setting the rule, we can be relatively sure the lists we count are legit.

2. We like to get people to actually participate in these forums, not just stop by once a year with a list. It's a good time. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll argue.

I said I'd count the new lists if people can get 30 posts before the deadline, so if you want it to be counted, get posting. I don't think 30 posts in a few weeks is that unreasonable. As I've told other people, there are threads like "Song Tag" and "What Are You Listening To Right Now?" where you could easily rack up 30 posts in a night. That's kind of a cheap way to do it, but it's within the rules.

Eric, I can see your point regarding reason no. 1, although I fail to see the problem with people "stopping by with a list". Point taken and understood. I doubt that I will spam the forums with 30 posts just to have my vote counted, though Wink
