My short list of the 11 best songs of 2006, in the order I thought of them. I'm sure I left some off, but these were the first 11:

2) "Roscoe" - Midlake
3) "The Zookeeper's Boy" - Mew
4) "Pull Shapes" - the Pipettes
5) "Pillar of Salt" - the Thermals
6) "Another Sunny Day" - Belle and Sebastian
7) "Sons and Daughters" - the Decemberists
8) "We Do Not Fuck Around" - Viva Voce
9) "Rock Bottom Riser" - Smog
10) "Hot Soft Light" - the Hold Steady
11) "For Money or Love" - the Like Young

I've got a new update on page 1. "Wolf Like Me" took the lead. I stopped the list at #24 because that's all the songs that have 3+ votes. #25 - #72 are essentially tied with 2 votes each.

Also, some of you are posting lists and don't meet the 2 month/30 post requirement to have you list counted in the final tally. However, if you get 30 posts before the deadline of Jan 15, I'll go back and add your list, just make sure you remind me. I've listed the names of users whose lists have been tallied on the fist page.

Tv on the Radio gets too much love (even though I like them) on metacritic. I'm rooting for Hot Chip, Midlake, or Gnarls.

I think Song Tag is a pretty weak way to get posts, but that's just me. (Then again, it's not like I did much for this post).

I don't really like the What Are You Listening To and Song Tag threads, because they have an almost complete lack of discussion. That doesn't stop me from posting in them, but other threads are cooler.

Well put. I come on this site to learn about new music that I may not know (not weather I can name a song with arm in it; after someone named a song with legin it). People's albums and song rankings are much more interesting. Another cool thread that is back up is the one where you mention your favorite part in singular songs. Always one of my favorites.

Am I still rambling...

Say what you will about Return to Cookie Mountain as a whole, "Wolf Like Me" is killer track. For an uptempo rock song, I don't think there was anything better in 2006.

I like it, in fact had in it my top 20. Just hope it doesn't win song of the year, after they get #1 or #2 album.

Sugartastic: Nice list. Great slow song by Smog.

Hope it doesn't look like I'm hating: I had Return to Cookie Mountain in the top 10, and Wolf Like Me top 20 and I was a lover top 10, so I do enjoy the band.

What I'd really love to see is Pull Shapes pull ahead in the late game. I love that song way too much. Red Face

I think "Wolf Like Me" is probably deserving of the #1 track of the year. I think it's the best thing TV on the Radio have done yet, and it has so much enthusiasm. Tunde is at the top of his game lyrically and vocally.

I'll throw together a quick list right quick, numbered just to keep track.

1. "Wolf Like Me" - TV on the Radio
2. "I was a Lover" - TV on the Radio
3. "Let's not Wrestle Mt. Heart Attack!" - Liars
4. "To Hold You, Drum" - Liars
5. "Not Just Words" - Black Heart Procession
6. "Shiola" - Murder by Death
7. "Brother" - Murder by Death
8. "Insistor" - Tapes 'n Tapes
9. "Wasted State of Mind" - Trail of Dead
10. "Can't Con an Honest John" - The Streets
11. "St. Rosa and the Swallows" - The Thermals
12. "Stuck Between Stations" - The Hold Steady
13. "Gone" - Built to Spill
14. "Someday Baby" - Bob Dylan
15. "Rats" - Sonic Youth
16. "The Funeral" - Band of Horses
17. "On a Neck, On a Spit" - Grizzly Bear
18. "Black Mission Goggles" - Man Man
19. "You Can Never Hold Back Spring" - Tom Waits
20. "Atoms for Peace" - Thom Yorke

Great song. Reminds of a song that could have been on the Billy Bragg & Wilco's albums.

the album by Sam Roberts - Chemical City is rarely talked about on metacritic.....It will be #1 or #2 on my list...Cat Power and Sam Roberts Band are battling it out. I hope I can figure out which will be first by end of Dec.

The singles I heard from that album were okay, but they are nothing compared to the ones on "we were born in a flame", his excellent first album.
