Also, earlier this year there was some talk of a thread where we could post a playlist for an end of the year mix CD. I'm not sure if this thread makes it redundant or not, but if there's interest, let me know, and I'll start one up.

This thread is just informational right? Like, they aren't going to post this up with our "album consensus", right?

I mean, most of these lists aren't that great: album based as we indie kids are, the vast majority of these lists include songs from the most popular albums: band of horses, hold steady, tapes n tapes, etc. So really, I'd say metacritic users don't make the best "singles" lists. Plenty of albums that we dismiss as junk have one or two great songs - in fact this characterizes most of mainstream radio.

That said - metacritic users do make a damn good album list - 2005's was better than any single critic list I've seen (it's actually very close to the personal list that I made before ever visiting the metacritic site at all!)

Anyway, I like the mixtape idea. Maybe the top 15 or so songs could be tallied, and then we could have a 2006 "Metacritic Users Mixtape". That would be cool. I'll post my own official list eventually, but I'm gonna try to find singles first - besides just picking the top songs from my favorite albums. Get it?!!

I think it's probably a little redundant. After we tally the results for this, you should have enough material for two mixes.

I can probably get this posted to the Best of 2006 Mainpage. Feel free to list singles, but since I don't even know what's a single anymore, I thought songs made more sense.

I posted the compiled list in my original post on page 1. So far, I'm only through the first page of contributers (mejis - TFIF). I'll get around to the rest of you tomorrow probably. But, after 10 lists Band of Horses' "The Funeral" is a clear favorite.

How about:

1) Centro-matic: Calling Thermatico
2) Califone: Spider's House
3) Drive By Truckers: Good bye
4) Bob Dylan: Thunder on the Mountain
5) Neko Case: Hold on, Hold on
6) Centro-matic: The Fugitive Have Won
7) Califone: Black Metal Valentine
8) the Hold Steay: Hot Soft Light
9) the Mountain Goats: Woke up new
10) Centro-matic: Patience for the Ride

Okay, so you might be able to tell I think Centro-matic and Califone had the two best albums of the year.

I actually find this topic as interesting as best album, since their is more variance (and more candidates).

My question is do Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Tiny Mix, etc, do any of them put out a top 10 songs of the year. I know everyone puts out a top 10 albums list, but which sites or magazines put out a top 10 song list?

Stylus is running it's week-long Best Songs of the Year list now. They count them down, 10 a day, for a week.

There's others, but I can't think of the publications offhand. I'll look into it. In the meantime, here's the current Stylus list, as of Thursday, December 14. Tomorrow they're doing Nos. 1 -- 10.

Pitchfork does top singles - a little less broad then top songs, and usually not as good as their album list is.
