unlike where Dan Bejar = Destroyer

I thought he was trying to make it very clear that Destroyer is a band, not a person.

I thought he was too, or so it seems so, but I'm not buying it. When he created Destroyer in 1995 as a solo project it was a solo project, later he just added a backing band. Sure different people play on the albums but although it is not credited on Destroyer's Rubies it is easy to tell that he wrote all of the music--just like that is evident in the previous albums. Not that it is the defiant source we all think it is, but even allmusic has Bejar listed as the only member of Destroyer.

And as for having that screen name for over five years, unlike where Dan Bejar = Destroyer and/or Trent Reznor = Nine Inch Nails, Thom Yorke does not equal Radiohead--all five are equally important.

Hey all. Sorry I haven't posted the final results yet. I've been keeping a spreadsheet tallying the lists as they came in, and I decided I should go back through and double check the totals tonight. Anyway, there turned out to be a few minor discrepancies, so I'm going to recheck the totals one more time tomorrow.

I can however tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that the top 4 songs of 2006 are:

1. Gnarls Barkley - "Crazy"
2. TV on the Radio - "Wolf Like Me"
3. Band of Horses - "The Funeral"
4. Midlake - "Roscoe"

#5 is either the Hold Steady's "Stuck Between Stations" or Peter Bjorn & John's "Young Folks". This is one of the discrepancies.

We're getting a new modem sent to our house that will arrive either tomorrow or the day after, so I guess we'll have to wait until then for me to post the results, though I'll try to find a way to do it sooner. Sorry for the delay.

I'm reminded of the 2000 Presidental election "results" now. Smiler

I know. I was shocked to see those two songs get that many votes too. Seven people actually thought those songs were good! Big Grin

"What You Know" was robbed. That song owns all.

And "Starlight" is a truly amazing song. I don't even like Muse that much and I can acknowledge that "Starlight" is... the shit.

Meh. I can't get into Muse. "Starlight" is alright I guess, but "Knights of Cydonia" is awful. It sounds like Queen circa the Flash Gordon Soundtrack. I keep waiting for someone to break into, "Flash! Aaaah - Ahhhhhh. Savior of the Universe!"

I like Muse, but I've only heard the new album once. I must admit though, I think it'd be great if Matt Bellamy broke into "Flash! Ahhhhhh" during Knights Of Cydonia.

So, aside from Muse, does anybody want to talk about the actual list?

I was a little surprised to see Peter Bjorn & John place so high. "Young Folks" wasn't even initally a contender, but came on like gangbusters at the end.

"Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken" was surprising, because, as far as I know, Camera Obscura didn't even make a dent in the Albums List. However, a lot of you seemed to really like the lead single.

Decemberists fans should've gotten together beforehand. I think they could've made a big dent in the list if everyone could agree on the album's best song. I think every single song from The Crane Wife showed up on someone's list.

I like both those songs. I was so burnt out from putting together my best albums list that I really didn't spend a ton of time on the songs list.

I guess of the top 25, I like just about all of them except you know who's. Wink I'm kind of surprised "Crazy" actually took the top spot. I like it, but never thought that many people would out it on their list.

Heh, I don't think sounding like Queen or the Flash Gordon soundtrack is necessarily a bad thing, but I can really see where you're coming from. And you haven't even heard "Take A Bow", which (while fantastic) is probably the "cheesiest" thing on the album. Big Grin

I do think you should give Muse a chance though. Black Holes and Revelations is definitely their "space" album, while Absolution is more apocalyptic.

Extremely ubiquitous from the early summer months onward so every respondent had heard it at least 50 times. Couple that with the fact that it's actually excellent; it has Cee-Lo's best vocal performance that I've heard & the very cute filmic-not-filmic strings and backing chorus. The beat was a little limp though, no? I've never really been impressed with Danger Mouse as a beatsmaker.

In fact I think this year was characterized in pretty low-quality beats overall in pop and rap. "Crazy"'s is pretty lame, "Promiscuous" is uninspiring, "Mr. Me Too," "My Love." Those are all great songs but they're great despite the beats rather than because of them.

EDIT: When I say "beats" in this post I mean the actual rhythmic, 'drum-like' beat to the song, not the use of the word "beats" to mean the entire musical backing of a rap song. Oh, and relistening to "Promiscuous" the beat is actually pretty good. My point stands about the other three and their cronies!
