We talked about doing this in the "Best of 2006: Discussion" thread, so I'm going to take some initiative and actually start it.

Basically, we want a final list of the Best Songs of 2006. I'll volunteer to tally the results. Here are the rules:

1. Make a list of your 30 favorite songs of 2006. You can include more, but I'm only counting your first 30.

2. Unlike the Best Album Lists, we're not using an ordered scoring system. The song that wins is simply the song that shows up with most frequency. If you want to order your list, you can, but #30 will carry the same weight as #1.

3. These are simply songs from 2006 albums. They don't have to be official singles.

4. Use your best judgment in cases like Tom Waits' Orphans where some of the songs were previously released. I'm not going to check all the songs, but “Fall of Troy” is like 10 years old, even though it is a great song.

5. Like the album thread, I'm only counting your list if you've been here for 2 months or have 30 posts (at the time you posted your list).

6. Deadline is January 15th.

I'll try to tally the results in this first post as often as I can.

Post away.
Final List:

Ha! Good catch. I forgot to add the rule that you can only list a song once in your list. I won't count it twice just because you list it twice. Even if it is a good song Smiler

I know we are not counting higher ranked songs more than others, but I'm going to go ahead and make a top 30 list ending with my favorite song of the year. I know it's tough (I mean is there really much difference between song 16 and 17), but this is, as best I could, my favorite 30 songs of the year (in order).
30. Another Sunny Day-Belle and Sebastian
29. Rubies-Destroyer
28. Just a Thought-Gnarls Barkley
27. Maggie-Cracker
26. Trains to Brazil-The Guillemots
25. Chelsea Dagger-The Fratelli's
24. Fake Tales of San Francisco-Arctic Monkeys
23. The Wonder-The Figurines
22. Valerie-The Zutons
21. Insistor-Tapes N'Tapes
20. Funeral-Band of Horses
19. The Gulag Orkestar-Beirut
18. Wolf Like Me-TV on the Radio
17. Scenic World-Beirut
16. Long Summer Day-Two Gallants
15. The Dugout-Ladyhawk
14. Young Bride-Midlake
13. Jenny, don't be hasty-Paolo Nutini
12. On a neck, on a spit-Grizzly Bear
11. Sawdust and Diamonds-Joanna Newsom
10. European Oils-Destroyer
9. Wish you well-Bernard Fanning
8. And I was a boy from School-Hot Chip
7. Emily-Joanna Newsom
6. For Wicked Gil (the slow version, not the album version)-Band of Horses
5. I was a lover-TV on the Radio
4. He who flattened your flame is getting torched-Danielson
3. Look after Me-Hot Chip
2. Crazy-Gnarls Barkley (became underrated because it got so popular, if that makes any sense)
1. Roscoe-Midlake (favorite song of the year)

Ready to hear criticism now. Tough to make a list of 30 songs and rank them.

In the very bottom right corner of each post, on the same line as your post number (if it's there), you will see a file folder with a pencil eraser on it. Click on that and edit away. Cool
