Sorry, didn't mean to sound dogmatic. I'm just trying to drum up conversation while I wait for Ernesto to dump 15 inches of rain on my house.

Album of the decade, Daniel? Really?

I thought it was a mild disappointment.

Yes. I think it's the album of the decade, so far (for me).

I should also add that I think the aughts (00s) have been very good for music.

I think "Twin Cinema" stands out because of the strength of the songwriting, the development of strong individual voices in the band (e.g., Newman, Case, Bejar and even Fancy), the tremendous precussion (the drummer's fills are ridiculous), and the layered harmonies. But the songs are what stand out the most; some of the weakest songs on the album, e.g., "Twin Cinema" and "Use It," are great songs. And the best songs -- e.g., "The Bleeding Heart Show," "Bones of an Idol," "Sing Me Spanish Techno," are among the most infectious songs of the decade.

Again, I recognize that this is subjective, and reflects nothing more than my (humble) opinion.

So, did that storm pass yet? Did it live up to its billing or was it a disappointment?

It passed, essentially as a non-event. Ernesto will still dump perhaps 5 -- 10 inches of rain throughout South Florida, but -- here in Coral Gables, at least -- we haven't even felt strong or gusty winds or experienced any loss of power.

I'm not complaining. Last year, we were hit with Katrina (admittedly, as a Category 1 Hurricane, nothing like the monster that hit New Orleans) and Wilma in a short span. Those storms really damaged the community. And in 1992, just as I was entering law school, I went through Hurricane Andrew, which is as bad as anything I've had to experience, in terms of natural disasters. So tonight's "non-event" was quite a relief.

Twin Cinema was excellent. And maybe it wasn't initally as 'infectious' as Mass Romantic or Electric, but I am sure that it is a "better" album in terms of writing, singing, and musicianship.

Is anyone else enjoying "Through the Windowpane" by Guillemots? I think this album is very strong and will probably be one of the best of the year.

For some reason, AC Newman's voice has started to bug me a little. I don't know what it is...

I still love the Neko Case and Dan Bejar tracks.

Twin Cinema definitely came out last year.

Wow, I can't believe it's been a year already. My bad. It looks like my post brought back some good (short-term) memories.

There may be an argument about whether Twin Cinema is the album of the decade. Sure. But, I think there can be no argument against saying TNP is the supergroup of the decade!

For some reason, Dan Bejar's voice bothers me. I don't know why.

Oh wait, yes I do. It's because he sounds like a frog.

Funny Smiler. I bought Twin Cinema before I ever heard Destroyer. I quite like it, but some songs were just a bit annoying, although I could not really say why right then. Then I bought Destroyer's Rubies and suddenly everything was clear. It was the songs with Bejar which were annoying, both his voice and his singing style. He isn't really singing as much as constantly proclaiming marvelous things that the rest of us are to stupid to understand, just as really bad actors do on stage. I picture him always wide eyed with the big truths he is telling us, but with just that small bit of faked humility which makes me want to vomit. It isn't song, it's theater.

That said, I also despise his song writing (musically, not his lyrics). It is so bloody bland and lazy. With "lalala" choruses in every song.

Sorry. Bit of a rant there. Red Face

I like Destroyer's Rubies very much, but I can see how Bejar's voice and musical tics (e.g., the "la-la-las") can be cloying for some listeners. Still, I think his "Streets of Fire" contribution to "Twin Cinema" is wonderful. Bejar's harmonies with Neko Case and the building thunder of the drums, breaking into the final chorus, are powerful moments.

I've too always considered Bejar's tracks the least appealing New Pornos tracks. However, the more I listen to Destroyer's Rubies, the more I like it. I think Bejar's style suits his own work much better than it suits the power pop style of the Pornos.

I don't know if I'd call his songwriting lazy. "Rubies" is a pretty amazing track, managing to go through enough twists and turns to keep it interesting for 9 minutes.

M. Ward's Post-War made it into P4K's recommended section today, and I must say it is a pretty good listen. His songs are great as always, but this time around he really ups the ante on the production.

Your entitled to your opinion but I disagree.
Neutral Milk and Microphones Glow Pt. 2 are my favorites of the decade so far.

I guess Bejar's voice does kind of have some of that Joanna Newsom quality to it that's really alienating to some listeners.

Right now I find Jackie to be the Porno's most addicting song, and I also like 'Ballad of the Comeback Kid' a lot, both Bejar tracks. His tracks on Twin Cinema weren't too hot.

Right. Besides, I never intended to suggest it was anything other than my opinion. And I'll happily check out the Microphones' album, too (who knows, maybe my opinion will change).

Does it live up to this description from the Pitchfork review?

quote:
Ward nearly equals the shear majesty of My Morning Jacket's "Golden" on "Chinese Translation", which features MMJ's Jim James on backing vocals.

"Golden" is a modern classic, so that's high praise indeed. It probably doesn't hurt that Jim James is backing. I'm getting into this M. Ward guy, since I heard him on a live recording of an MMJ concert.
