Eric:
I've only heard a handful of songs, so I might be mistaken, but Loose Fur is anything but noise rock. The first single from the forthcoming album -- "Thou Shalt Wilt" -- has a jazzy, distinctively Steely Dan feel, and clever lyrics. The MP3 is available, and it's made me anxious to hear more.

It's too early for me and this will drastically change but here it is for now.
1. Electric President "Electric President" 2. Gregor Samsa 55:12 3. Cat Power "The Greatest" 4. Mogwai "Mr. Beast" 5. I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness "Fear Is On Our Side"

I'll have to give Jenny Lewis another listen, because so far I just don't see what all the rage is.
I think the rage is that Jenny Lewis is one of the only albums that's come out this year that a whole lot of us have picked up... I'd be surprised if it people were still listing it at the top of their lists come December.

So does everyone here really hate The Strokes new album? I thought it was really different and actually pretty good. I dont think it will be in my top 10 at the end of the year but it is probably my favorite so far.

I don't hate it. But its not one of my favorites of the year. It is nice to see them go in a slight different direction though.

I don't hate it either. I think there are a handful of very good songs and some mediocre ones, but overall it's a fairly enjoyable listen...just not a great album.

I really love some of the tracks on The Life Pursuit. I think it may take a little time to fully grow on me, but the highlights are pretty fun.

Yeah I agree. I'm not always in a B&S mood but I've had this leak for a while and I think it's pretty good. By the way, it has received the 'Fork stamp of approval (8.5, Best New Music). Marc Hogan wrote the review; he's probably their best critic in terms of writing (and staying on point, which shouldn't be a big deal, but it is).

Just got my hands on the new Elbow "Leaders of the Free World". I love it! It's my new best of 2006. I can't see it getting easily topped. It's really good!
Every song is really unique, the lyrics are the bomb, musicianship is excellent. I totally disagree with Pitchfork on this one! It rocks.

Sorry but I haven't been a big fan since Isobel Campbell left.

I thought this came out domestically a while ago. I bought it off the new release rack for $12 in November. Odd. Anywho, I really like the front half of Leaders, but I think it kind of tails off after the fifth track or so.

The Coalition Record stores got it last year as part of their "indie store only" promotion (the same one that gave us the mass release of the live Bright Eyes disc, the Ray Lamontagne Bonnaroo ep, and a few other indie-store only items) but it got a wider distribution this year. I think it's quite excellent, actually.

I am really surprised that those who picked this record up last year didn't make too much of a fuss about it. It really gets under your skin in kind of the same way as No Cities Left does.

I had it at #16 on my 2005 list. I liked it, but I was also kind of dissapointed. It fell short of my expectations, since I LOVED "Asleep in the Back" and "Cast of Thousands".

I just heard the new Minus 5 album (aka The Gun Album). I think it's one of the more solid releases I've heard this year. Fans of Beatlesque pop, and bands like Wilco and the New Pornographers, should be all over this album. Colin Meloy of the Decemberists also pops up to contribute lead vocals to a track ("Cemetary Row"), and although I'm no Decemberists fan, it sounds great.
----- I’ll be Ben Gazzara, you’ll be Gena Rowlands.

A very early initial list, but this year has been great so far.
1. Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit 2. Man Man - Six Demon Bag 3. Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings The Flood 4. Liars - Drums Not Dead
The new Flaming Lips will be up pretty high too...

I didn't find the new Elbow that great. In general, I find all their albums have a couple of really standout tracks and the rest don't quite reach those highlights.
