What if people just voted for their 30 (or even as many as 50) favorite songs of 2006, but in no particular order? Then, we just count those with the most votes and compile a top 20.

I wouldn't mind doing the unordered list for tracks. I think it's a bit tougher to rank individual tracks than it is albums. It'd make it easier to tally, that's for sure.

Who the hell has time to rank 30 songs? Unordered, please.

That's what they do with Pazz & Jop singles. I think they just rank them based on number of mentions. I'm all for that.

Also, I don't know about limiting the number of songs from an album. We have the album thread for best "collection" of songs, so I would hope members' lists take that into consideration. Personally, I'm going to try to come up with 30 different artists, so I'll have to pick my faves from each album, but I'm not sure I should force that on everybody.

So, should I start the new thread? I'm going to have to think a lot about this one, so I won't be posting a list any time soon.

I still think you should have songs ranked. I mean a better song (in one's opinion) should be ranked higher. How about everyone mentions their 10 favorite songs and those are worth something like (10,9,8,etc) and then you can have kind of an honorable mention list, where each song counts as 1 point.

I think everyone can at least rank 10 songs, and throw all the other ones they like in an honorable mention list . I just think songs that are truly great (i.e. ranked #1 or #2) should get more points then your 25th favorite song of the year.

I don't know. I started compiling tracks this morning, and I had no problem coming up with 50 songs I really love from this year. It's hard to say which is the absolute best. On any given day, depending on my mood & what I'm doing, any one of them could be my favorite.

I absolutely agree. Also, whoever is compiling this would have a much harder task than with the albums if we assign point values rather than just tallies...that is, there are going to be a lot more songs mentioned than albums. Plus, this is really just a side note to the more important albums list anyway.

Damn, so for the final list, I'm guessing the Lindstrøm album can't be included...... right?

You can include it PQ, but only you.

I think that is true of albums as well. But if there are going to be too many songs, I guess there is no other way. I just would rather have my No. 1 song of the year count more than #25. Oh well.

You have more criteria to judge an album on than one individual song. Honestly, I don't think it's going to make much difference whether the songs are assigned points or not, I fully expect these song lists to be all over the map since we're not confining the list to "singles". If there's overwhelming support for an ordered list, I have no problem doing it, but I'll tell you right now, there isn't much difference between my #1 and my #15

Yeah, I think it'd be really hard to devise an accurate points list for songs. I'd just go by # of mentions. Also, I don't see anything wrong with including 2, or maybe 3 songs from the same album.

No rankings then, not a problem. I do think you should definitely be able to put more than 1 song per album. Why penalize a group for having multiple good songs?

It's fine I guess. It's just something else I was throwing out. Again, I think you'll find that with only 30 slots to work with, you probably won't be including more than a couple tracks from each album. Think of all those mediocre albums that have one great song on them.
