A review that led me to them described Catfish Haven as "a sort of alt-country howl that’s distantly related to grunge, with traces of Meat Puppets and Violent Femmes". That's probably more true than not. I'd also call their style indie swamp rock. They toured recently with My Morning Jacket.

Hmm..two Rilo Kiley albums, and that Catfish whatever album. Looks like there'll probably be nothing for me to pick up till Jan 24th, then three or four things for me to pick up.

Well, I don't know the Meat Puppets or Violent Femmes, but if it's on Secretly Canadian it's probably worth checking out.

This one's pretty good. The bookends, Elton John's "Daniel" and Springsteen's "Thunder Road," are great. In between, most of the songs (not all) are good. The more I listen to it the more I like it, and I'm not even a fan of Oldham or Tortoise.
Maximo Park, whose record I enjoyed last year but need to revisit, have a collection of B-sides and demos coming out in February. It's funny that a band with one record already has a compilation coming out, but I'm interested in hearing it. I've heard they've got good b-sides.
The current 'next big thing' in the UK, The Arctic Monkeys, have a US release of their record due in February. I liked the single "I'll Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor" and I look forward to hearing the album.

I just found out via their message board that Shearwater has a new album coming out in May. I know there are a lot of Okkervil fans here, and if you like Okkervil, you'd probably like Shearwater. Will Scheff, the lead singer from Okkervil, also sings about half the songs for Shearwater.

I heard them play on a Podcast last week, they're really good. Similar to Okkervil but a bit more folkish. I'll probably end up getting their new one when it comes out.

The most interesting new releases often come from left field, e.g.., Clap Your Hands Say Yeah in 2005, Arcade Fire in 2004. In 2006, I think some of the following may be such a "bolt from the blue":
Gnarles Barkley -- This is a collaboration between DangerMouse and Cee-Lo. If the three songs I've heard from it (including
quote:
Crazy,
) are representative, this is going to be a monster album.
Birdmonster -- The group's self-titled EP was released last year, and the three songs on it (including
quote:
Resurrection Song,
and
quote:
All the Holes in the Walls
) were catchy, complicated rock songs that shunned traditional song structures. Pitchfork praised The Wilderness' self-titled debut last year as a return to complicated, demanding rock. You can say the same thing about Birdmonster, but -- to me, at least -- they're so much further ahead of The Wilderness on this score, and their music is so much more varied in pace and tone than The Wilderness' (whom I also like).
Voxtrot -- This group's 2005 EP was also amazing. I've read people describe it as "twee," but I don't hear that. Instead, I hear updated shades of The Smiths and The Cure.
Given the publicity surrounding these projects, I guess you can't say they will be "bolts from the blue," but I am anxious to hear new albums from Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Tortoise, the Arctic Monkeys, Neko Case and Cat Power.
