I read in a magazine interview Sufjan did that he's going to take care of New Jersey next year. I've also heard that the record in question will come out in the middle of next year. Sufjan, as many know, is an extremely prolific singer/songwriter and already has one-off songs made for several different states.

Take all that as you will.

I was looking forward to starting the year with Nellie McKay's sophmore effort, but that's looking unlikely.

Have you checked out their message board? Not to sound like a street-teamer, but it's one of the best music discussion forums I've seen.

I had thought that might be the board you've referenced around here before, d.

I don't spend a lot of time on their board. It's a pretty tight community, which means there's a lot of chatter and I don't always have time for it, but what you've said in the past is true. That bunch has really big ears and a musical knowledge that runs wide and deep.

I should drop by more often. Thanks for the reminder.

Pearl Jam is definitely one I have my eye on. Avril might have one coming. Eisley, The Donnas, Guster, Snow Patrol, Travis, The Shins, The Wrens, and the mentioned Jenny Lewis are also on Metacritic's upcoming list. And I hope Nellie McKay's album is released. Stupid record company.

I guess Jan 24 is the first big new release day of 2006. All of the following are coming out that day:

Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins
The Elected (odd that both Rilo Kiley folks have records out on the same day, eh?)
Clearlake
Film School
East River Pipe
Duncan Shiek
The Go-Betweens (live CD and DVD)
Rocky Votolato

I heard a leak of that Clearlake album. It was worse than their first album, which I didn't particularly like. The only good song was "Good Clean Fun," which I think is scheduled to be the first single. I really have no interest in any of the January 24 releases. I keep waiting for release dates for the new Fiery Furnaces and Grandaddy albums, which I thought would be coming out in either January or February.

Jenny Lewis is the singer for Rilo Kiley and the guitarist of Rilo Kiley, Blake, is the main man in The Elected.

Clearlake is a cool British band who aren't quite Britpop but not atmospheric enough to be shoegaze. I like them much more than RL does.

East River Pipe is one dude, F.M. Cornog, who records in his New York apartment and might be compared to a poppier Smog, or a less chaotic Guided By Voices, or a less symphonic Magnetic Fields. He's quite good.

I just checked out a few tracks of "Cedars" and I like what I heard. It looks like they only have 2 LP's? Is there a better one to start with?

East River Pipe's 1999 release, "The Gasoline Age" got some fairly decent recognition. Lambchop also recorded a couple ERP songs on their "What Another Man Spills" album. It's pretty good poppy stuff.

A little bird told me that The Greatest is unbelievable. Maybe even better than You Are Free. Also told me that the new Belle and Sebastian is pretty good.

I really want to see the New Pornos supporting Belle and Sebastian this spring.

I was looking forward to the Isobel Campbell/Mark Lanegan full length cd. I love the ep but now I hear the album might have not have a US release or at least not for months. Has anyone heard otherwise?

Have heard great samples from Catfish Haven's debut release on Secretly Canadian, to be released on Jan 24. Must support the hometown label.
