yeah, I've heard complaints about the spoken-word tune. I've heard the album is a grower. I seem to recall myself taking a while to warm up to Just Beyond the River.
Has anyone picked up a copy of James Hunter's new album? It is all over the blogs that I visit, and it sounds pretty darn good to me. It sounds like jackie robinson fronting an old rocksteady band, which is a good sound.
Uh, the new Magnolia Electric Co album, Fading Trails, has leaked, and it looks like it's about 28 minutes long with 9 songs. I sure as hell hope this is going to be released as an EP. Charging full price for something like that would be borderline criminal.

Yeah, it's leaked. I think it's a mish-mash slap-together type of album of different recordies/demo's from different times, studios and producers. I understand it's not very cohesive because of that, however, I still can't wait to get it cause Molina does no wrong for me.
Hey Raving, I have to say...I really like the new James Yorkston. Not sure why it don't work for you.
I gave the new Bonnie Prince Billy, Magnolia Electric Co, Califone, Richard Buckner, Micah P. Hinson, Eric Bachmann (Crooked Fingers) and James Yorkson all some serious listening to on the weekend and I rate them this way:
Richard Buckner - Meadow - EXCELLENT James Yorkston - Year of the Leopard - VERY GOOD Magnolia Electric - Fading Trails - GOOD Bonnie Prince Billy - Then the letting Go - OK Califone - Roots and Crowns - AVERAGE Eric Bachmann - To The Races - BELOW AVERAGE Micah P. Hinson - Opera Circuit - TERRIBLE

James Yorkston's Year of the Leopard is a very nice album. By which I mean to say, it sucks. It really is nice, the same way you're kindergarden teacher is nice. But really, what kind of personality does your kindergarden teacher have? She's pretty damn boring, right? That's what I think of this album. It sounds like the soundtrack to walking your dog around a suburban block, but that's a pretty lame and unremarkable thing to do, no? It's all very nice, but I see no beauty, no pain, no anguish, no joy, no love. All I hear is niceness.
I've listened to the Richard Buckner twice now, and my first impression is that it is quite good. It needs more time though.
The new Magnolia Electric Co is a severe disappointment to me. It's really average, and I didn't think that was something I'd be saying about a Jason Molina record.
I haven't listened to the Califone in a while, but my first impression was that it was very good. I'll be revisiting it again soon for a more definitive opinion.
Now to see what all the fuss about this Midlake album is all about...

I actually agree with your assesment, RL. I like all three artists to some degree (I really like Spencer Krug), but I just can't imagine how three of the most overbearing and attention-grabing vocalist around could produce something that isn't annoying, especially over the span of an entire album. Can you imagine a Bejar/Mercer harmony? I can - and it sounds nasty in my head.
Maybe they'll prove me wrong, though. They all are great songwriters.

I'll bet you anything neither comes out this yera. They would've said something by now. It seems like there's almost always at least 6 months between the release date and the announcement that the album's been recorded. 'Course Thom Yorke fooled us there, but we didn't even know that record was coming at all.
