I disagree. Old Black Hen is awesome. Jason could not have song that song the way that other dude could. It's things like Old Black Hen and that other tune on the same album sung by Scout Niblett that makes me dig Jason Molina so much, he's unconventional if that's the right word. His recordings are truly a joint effort. The cool thing about that album is that none of the players had heard the songs before entering the studio. Which is one of the reasons why that album, IMO is one of the best albums released this decade, it has a real collaborative live off the floor effort, sort of like old Neil Young records, in the momment, real. I think it is Jim from Jim and Jennie and the Pinetops who sings Old Black Hen. Jennie is the girl who sings that song on What Comes After The Blues.

coming september 12th on secretly canadian is yet another new magnolia release entitled "fading trails". it'll be composed of various recent recording sessions jason molina and company (both familiar and new) did with steve albini, david lowery and at the famous sun studios in memphis, tennessee... most intriguing of all, it will also feature the demos from the lost shohola album."
I have no idea what the "lost Shohola album" is but I can never get enough of Jason Molina. This means that he could be releasing 4 albums this year. Ridiculous. And awesome.
AWESOME NEWS!

Amen, bro. It wasn't Steve Albini. I think the guy's name was Lawrence Peters.

But for the record, Steve Albini is one of the coolest people on the planet for my money. I am very much looking forward to a follow up DFA 1979 album. Love me some bass and drum duos, even if they are mediocre and one-dimensional (see: Lightning Bolt, Need New Body)

Elephant Micah - And the Hindu Windmills
I'm just starting to really get into this guy, and I can't recommend him enough. It's kind of a folk/country/lo-fi/singer-songwriter kind of thing. He's got a great voice, and most of his songs are pretty mellow or sad. Sometimes, though, he uses some sort of cheap plastic amplifier for his electric guitar, and it makes a really awesome sound.
And the Agrarian Malaise and And the Palmyra Palm are my two favorites of his, but all of it is good. He's from some small town in Indiana, and most of his stuff is really limited-release.
The new Elephant Micah is one that I have been really looking forward to for a long while. I was turned on to "and the Agrarian Malaise" by a friend from another music website who was kind enough to burn me a copy of .....Malaise" due to it being out of print. I was somewhat hesitant due to my indifference of EM's previous releases to that, found them somewhat sloppy and too lo-fi but on Malaise there is a significant improvement in song craft and talent. Most people in the know on Elephant Micah are all of the feeling that Elephant Micah is on the verge of exploding on to the music landscape once they/he gets some proper label support and money behind him/them. They are sort of like leading the 'Artists on the verge' list. Can't wait for Hindu Windmills. Just not sure what the deal is regarding lack of news.

I See a Darkness is most defenitely in my Top 5 albums released in the last 20 years. The problem with Will Oldham is that he hasn't really done anything remotely as good since. In which I know is a tall order but none the less. Ease on Down the Road, Master and Everyone and Superwolf are decent, I like them quite a bit, but Will just hasn't hit that same greatness in a while as he did on I See A Darkness. That album he did with Tortoise last recently was awful. I'd say I've most enjoyed Bonnie Prince Billy sings Greatest Palace Music the most out of any album he's made since Darkness and that album is just old Palace Music songs re-done so it's not a considered album release of new material. I sure hope he rediscovers his greatness with this new one coming out but I am concerned that he had Bjork's producers record the album for him and that the album is recorded in Iceland. I hope Will isn't getting all techno on us with that recent Tortoise collaboration and Bjork's producer.
