I also didn't like the Thermals when I checked it out, but so many people like it maybe I'll give it another chance.

Yeah, definetely Ys, if you don't mind her voice and don't see it as a necessarily bad thing to avoid having any structure for snotty artistic purposes. (Shoo-in for my top five at least.)

I think that the two best Waits albums to start with are "The Heart of Saturday Night" and "Nighthawks at the Diner" since they showcase Waits' voice at it's least nuanced and most mainstream...

I never hated any of you/I loved you all at the time

Nighthawks at the Diner should be one of the last purchases. I'd love to hear The Heart of Saturday Night re-recorded with the razors in his throat.

If you can't get past the vocal delivery in his latter years—that is, to say, post-1974—then don't try at all. Small Change and Rain Dogs are the first two purchases to make. If you don't like either, I'd suggest finding another artist to explore.

"Nighthawks" is my favorite Waits record. Its basically a rap record. I haven't dug "Rain Dogs" too much since my first and second listens.

for me, "alice" was the perfect intro for waits.

Seconded. As far as Waits releases go, Nighthawks is pretty inessential. I missed the boat on Waits up until the mid-90s. My first introduction to him was actually the Dead Man Walking soundtrack, to which he contributed two songs. Those both show up on Orphans now: "Walk Away" and "The Fall of Troy". I'd agree with Leland's assessment of Rain Dogs and Small Change as good Waits starter albums though. I'd also throw in Bone Machine.

I wouldn't say that, but as an entry point to his catalog, it's irrelevant. OK, if you like it, I could recommend Small Change or Rain Dogs. If you don't, I could recommend...Small Change or Rain Dogs. I personally love Nighthawks, but it's something you have to pick up once you figure out what you think of Waits.

I second this, one of the best saxophones I have heard on a popular song in a long time.
