I don't think there's been a "great release" this year, but there has been quite a few "very good" releases; and I'm sure that there will be at least a few "Great Releases" by year's end. My opinons have been based on the fact, for me at least, there has been many albums on the verge of brilliance, and that many subsequent releases will have a more-than-probable chance of being considered great by year's end, given the odds. Of course, I may be wrong (every year can't be 2002/2005, can it?)
Of course, I still espouse that both Nathan Fake's and the Liar's albums are very close. Other than that, though, I'm still waiting for that "Okkervil River / Andrew Bird / John Vanderslice" experience of 2005; and unlike most contributors of this forum, I haven't listened to The Knife yet (I'm waiting for the domestic release), so maybe I'll love that album as well.
I've been pretty disappointed this year. The best album I've heard so far is probably On an Island by David Gilmour, which can't be the best album of the year. It just can't be. I had high hopes for Espers II, but was very disappointed. Their debut was promising, and The Weed Tree was more promising, but they went in the wrong direction on II. The new Built to Spill isn't quite great enough either... The Pipettes sure as fuck don't cut the grade. I listened to the leaked TV on the Radio and it wasnt very great. Belle and Sebastian are one of the worst bands ever... dont get me started on tapes n tapes..
Well, I haven't heard everything from this year. There's probably a few more good ones.
Give TV On the Radio a couple more listens. It wasn't til the 4th or 5th time all the way through that I really sunk my teeth into it. So far I'm guessing them and Liars are the ones to beat.
I just now got 'Silent Shout' from Yahoo Unlimited, but I haven't found anything amazing, like Gimme Fiction or Illinoise or the Mysterious Production of Eggs last year.
So far, I think "Drum's Not Dead" and the TV on the Radio are the best I've heard, but I can't imagine that they'd top the list or even make top 3 if they had come out in 2005.
So basically, I too am waiting for something amazing, and I sadly think that 2006 kind of sucks so far.

Well, you could always bring out the classics. And aren't you mad that the TV on the Radio import costs so much. It cost me $25 but it was worth it.
