Which two albums are you referring to? Also, I have been wanting to hear Destroyer's album but 1)It is no where to be found in this entire town and 2) I cant find any songs of it on my downloading program. Anyways, I also feel like this year has been for the most part a let down, besides Ghostface Killah's and maybe The Strokes' and Gnarls Barkley's albums there hasn't been anything else that really grips me. I didn't like the Arctic Monkeys and Belle and Sebastian albums either. This time last year we already had a slew of great albums from bands and artists like Antony & the Johnsons, Andrew Bird, Beck, Bright Eyes, Common, Bloc Party, Gorillaz, LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A., The Mars Volta, Spoon, System of a Down, The White Stripes, and Okkervil River. I am still waiting for an album like any from the aforementioned artists. And also when does the TV on the Radio album come out?

I don't see what the point of this thread is, either....
Bye then!
The point, bullfinch, is that you should read the other Forums and try to fit your discussion in with existing Forums before you start a whole new thread on a topic being covered by at least three other threads. There's been a whole ongoing discussion in several places claiming that 2006 has been a down year, so your assertion is fine, but it's already being covered. Lurk around in the Best Records of 2006 thread and see what I'm talking about. And, if you're going to start a thread, it's fair for people to expect you to explain: 1. What you think a 'great' record is 2. What records, from 2006, are good, if not great 3. Have you found records from other recent years (2005) great? Why? But the point is moot, I guess, because you seem to be playing the 'I'm taking my toys and going home' route, because people don't get the point of this thread.

I think you should spend less time policing these forums, you're acting like a right spanner.

What is this? Don't be so defensive and take good advise when it comes your way. So far, you are the only one throwing around words like asshole. Nobody here is attacking you. We simply wanted your opinions and suggestions on what you considered classics. At this point, you seem more interested in burning bridges and being confrontational. That's too bad.

And you, apparently, have nothing interesting to say. You've yet to say anything even remotely clever or insightful. And, for the record, if I were "policing", I'd simply delete this dud of a thread. I was trying to provide constructive criticism, but someone whose best take is "in my opinion there hasn't been a really great album this year" is obviously not going to care. I at least follow through on my threats...I could have sworn you said 'bye' before, yet you've decided to come back to name-call. And while I may be a 'spanner,' at least I can spell and punctuate.

Wow, this thread just got a lot more interesting/entertaining. Stand your ground philosopherEric, bullfinch is hilarious. I hope he comes back for more. I like threads where people can be sharing ideas and learning from one another through healthy debate...but watching idiots get their shit fed to them is pretty enjoyable as well.

Nothing yet of the Caliber of The Woods, Illinois, Black Sheep Boy, Sunset Tree, or a few others from 2005.
But I would argue that Rubies, 'Sno Angel Like You, and a new one for me that I just heard, Beiruit's Gulag Orkestra all have that special Je ne cest pas that defines excellent albums that succeed in creating a singular feel. And that Stadium Arcadium and Snow Patrol, though both commercial, are both loaded with tons of great mainstream musical moments.
Haven't heard the Knife yet, so can't comment on that.
Bongo, your definition of exceptional is much less exacting than mine, most of the works you list are solid, but few are great.
And got to say I'm not on the Herbert "Scale" bandwagon at all...it's basically a TLC record disquised as electronica. Boring, Boring, Blah.

OK... how about this TRULY EXCEPTIONALDanielson Herbert Victory At Sea I think the sampling on Herbert's Scale is a work of genius and Danielson and Victory at Sea could be on repeat for the rest of the year. And they're all different genres too.

Not so, I have stated my opinion. A lot of you are just attacking me for starting a thread like this. This place seems to have a bit of a clique if you ask me. It matters not what I consider to be classics, in this thread I am asking for YOUR opinions.

Right, now I shall comment and give you my opinion (good things come to those who wait). That is a lot of exceptional albums there. imo, there doesnt tend to be more than 2 or 3 exceptional albums a year. this year I havent found 1 yet. Some of my exceptional albums from years past would be Siamese Dream, Gomez's first album, Franz Ferdinand's first album (perhaps), Megadeth's Peace Sells..., The Stone Roses' first. They to me are exceptional, albums that really impress me rather than just being good. And there havent been any this year. So there, I have given you my opinion. I think some of you think you own this place though dont you. Least pleasant messageboard I've posted on for some time.

No one is keeping you here against your will. I, for one, will not waste another second on this thread or you.

I'm done with this debate. My first attempts at commmenting on this thread were attempts to get bullfinch to do something new and/or to explain what he was finding lacking in the music of 2006. He claims to have only been asking for our opinions, which is clearly the point of numerous other threads in the Best of 2006 Forum alone, so this thread was just covering no ground. I offered him some constructive criticism, and he responded by acting like an 8-year old and calling names.
Those people who act like they 'own' this board just have a standard of discourse that they like to see met here, and Bullfinch seems not to care what that is. He's happy to make vague statements and claims without explanation and then get pissy when people ask him for justification. This board isn't OWNED by the people on it, but what makes it interesting is the people on it. If you don't want to contribute in an intelligent, thoughtful fashion, than go sit in front of a 7-11 and mumble at passing cars about things that suck.
I was making no attempt to run bullfinch off at first, but since his response to my attempt to get him to participate in a debate was to call me a 'spanner,' he's a waste of time in my book.
I also have no respect for people who bitch and moan and make "I quit" threats but can't follow through. If we're so unpleasant, then leave and don't come back. You've added nothing to these boards, and the only person here who cares if you stay is Bongo.

Nothing from my Top Ten (from the year so far) would have made my Top Ten last year, but there's been a nice abundance of 'good' and 'great' albums that aren't necessarily classics. Belle and Sebastian, Flamings Lips, The Knife, Thom Yorke, Islands, Camera Obscura, Sonic Youth......that's a great bunch. And then there's been some flat out amazing songs on a release like Nelly Furtado's that is being overlooked due to a few weak tracks.

I still can't stop listening to Neko Case and Josh Ritter. I think they are probably two that I will be listening to years from now.
