The list will be top 20 albums. There are two options on the method for compiling composite scores:

1. 30-25-20-17-16-15-14...down to 1 point for your 20th ranked album.

2. You assign scores however you please, with a total of 200 points to divide between albums.

Advantage of #1: simpler

Advantage of #2: more accurate

Anyone with 20 or more posts can vote on this. Just put a simple 1 or 2. I'll give people 2 weeks to vote, which means until November 9th. Whichever gets the most votes we'll go with.

I think we should go for the (significantly) simpler option. I think the more complex one might put off some people from even making a list, and a larger sample size is always nice if we're looking for a 'consensus' vote.

but, because that is a lot of work for people, I think we should have a default score for each rank if you don't feel like scoring them yourself. Does the total points in version 1 add up to 200?

I'm voting for option 1. Option 2 could get a little muddy.

I'm fine with either, but I'd probably prefer the first option, since it's easier.

I have enough trouble choosing twenty albums, so my vote is #1.

It's been emotional.

What's the deal with the #1 score being 30? Is that to total 200 points?

The main thing that worries me about option #2 is that someone could assign their favorite record (say, Paris Hilton's) 181 points and each of their remaining favorites (2-20) 1 point each, really skewing the list. I appreciate that option 2 gives people the option to REALLY love their favorites (I'd give 50 out of 200 for the Hold Steady, easy) but it also may make the scoring really exaggerated.

I agree with pE on this one. I feel like option 2 is probably a better option as well but the scoring could really become unfair. So I guess my vote is for option 1

I made the top 3 worth more than simply 20-19-18 because I figure there's more likely to be a big gap between one's top few albums than a few in the middle of end of one's list. For some people that will maybe less accurate than a straight 20-19-18 list, but I think overall it presents a more accurate picture.

I think #1 is simpler, although a modified version of #2 would be my favourite... But, as it stands:

I guess I'll vote for 2, but I'm a little indifferent.

but for my money it should be 20,19,18 etc. There isn't 13 points-worth between a 1st and a 4th, IMO.

actually, IMO it should just be a top 10. There'll be LOTS of entries, 10 is plenty, there'll still be plenty of albums nominated in total to give an overall forum top 20 (top 50 even, probably).

I think RL's thinking was that most people like their top 3 a whole lot more than anything else, so they should carry more weight. I'd say that's probably true in most cases.

As for the top 20 thing, I think most people can easily do a top 20. As with last year, I think you can do a top 10 if you want and only the points for those will be recorded.
