I didn't mean the effects looked bad, I was typing more about how they keep claiming they've upped the action. If they're resorting to smooshing the Hulk with "The Matrix"... Now, take a gander at this picture. Did ya notice anything strange? THE HULK IS BLEEDING?! I MEAN, C'MON! WHAT KINDA CRAP IS THAT? AND LOOK AT HOW PUNY HE IS! DOES THIS LOOK LIKE THE STRONGEST CHARACTER IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE?! I dunno about this one. It seems they're goin' all "X-Men" and ruining these characters. I hope not, but after reading about the changes they're making, seeing Roth jumping around like Neo and NOW the Hulk has open wounds... I just dunno. With all of their changes, he better at least say "HULK SMASH!" Guess I should reserve judgment, but it's just so much fun to complain! Man! I just saw the international trailer for "Wanted" and GOOD GRAVY, BABY , this movie looks even better! Did you see how they followed that friggin' bullet all the way through its target's head?! Whooooooooo hoooooooooo! As for "Ghost Rider", I loved the effects work. As for the acting and storyline... not so much. But that flaming skull... MAN! I've never been a huge fan, but to see him brought to life onscreen... it was waaaaay too cool for me. It actually took a few viewings before I started craving more than just Ghost Rider up on the screen. Special effects that involve human skulls on fire do that to me sometimes. It doesn't happen a whole lot, but it does happen.

I am a huge comicbook nerd. And since, admitting that usually doesn't garner much respect from society , I only expect the best when a project interprets my favorite medium up on the big screen. We comicbook fans don't need any more ammunition to makes us seem any more goofy than we already are. We can do that all by ourselves. ALL by ourselves. With that said, here are my top fave comicbook superhero movies: 5. Batman Begins - While Tim Burton's was the first to finally introduce the down to earth grittiness that revealed Batman as the real badass that we who read his comics knew that he really was, there was still a cetain flamboyancy ( as is in all of Burton's films) that allowed those filmmakers whose followed in this franchise after Burton, to systematically bring the Caped Crusader down almost to the level of Adam West doing the bat-toosie. This reboot came along & completely eliminated the almost unrepairable bat-damage still lingering in the minds of general movie-goers. I remember sitting thru the first scene of this film & thinking to myself that it was hard to believe that what I was watching was actually a superhero movie. I can even overlook the fact that the Bat-Mobile was now more of a massively unbatlike tank/dune-buggy hybrid that it was an actual sleek yet indestructible ass-kicking ride that we all average joe mortal-types like to fantasize owning. 4. Blade - A very insignificant character in the Marvel universe is transformed on the big-screen into a sword-welding, bad-ass with the fightng skillz that Batman only wishes he possessed. The fight scenes in this movie are a true stand-out for any kind of action movie. Yo, and the story & visuals supercede any comicbook that Blade was ever involved in. Now this is how all superhero film adaptations should be approached. 3. Superman 2 - Okay, after his intro in the first movie, Supes now gets to take the the kids gloves off, kick some real ass & take names. And the Lois Lane/Clark Kent romance subplot is strong enough to negate the out-of-left-field big plastic-wrap S insignia that the Man Of Steel pulls off his chest ( "wtf?"). Yo, Ka-El, with great power not only comes great responsibility, but also, great sacrifices too. 2. Spiderman 2 - I should've known that this was going to turn into one of my favorite movie adaptations of a comicbook superhero when, before I entered the theatre, my spider-senses didn't go off, all atingling an' shit. 1. Superman - No matter what anyone says, the original gangsta of superheroes. So it is only fitting that the last son of Krypton's big-budget movie debut should turn out to be the one that all others must be measured by. And while I know that this movie does have it's dated flaws, it was, just like the character whom it portrayed, the one that started on how epic the idea of a superhero could truly be. ... & my top fave non-superhero comic-book based movies: 5. Men In Black - Since I never read the comic-book when the move came out, I decided to check it out. The comic was a piece of crap. Which made me appreciate this fun, escapist film even more. 4. 300 - I thought the limited comicbook series was okay. Frank Miller took this movie & used it to add a whole different dimension to the telling of this early historic battle. While the story itself suffered a bit because it had to shorten into a "two-hour" movie ( or however long this thing ran), it seemed to be made up by the surrealist matrix-like effects that were used to enhance the story-telling in a manner such as when an artist uses a new medium for his/her artwork. In this history epic, I have seen the future of film storytelling, & it works. 3. Ghost World - While I had seen Scarlett Johansson before in other movies, this was the first one where I had fallen in love with her. I alwaysed liked Dan Clowes work. He definitely subscribed to the idea of having a "style that was all his own". And for my money, this style fits in even more effectively in the medium of film than it does in the comicbook version of what is known as the "alternative" genre ( which already, it does so quite successfully). Dan Clowes' movies bring a well-welcomed shot of something new & different to watch as his comics bring to the experience of reading. 2. Road To Perdition - Let's forget the comicbook for a moment. This is a quality film that adresses something that rarely gets any notice from any mobster movie: the relationship of a gangster with his kid(s). Just this one aspect of the mafia lifestyle is enough to open a new set of ideas for future movies plotlines that focus on those in the world of organized crime. 1. Sin City - the weird thing about this movie is that the male lead characters are all practically the same guy. And the stories don't seem to stray too off to far from each other or from a theme that we've all seen on the big screen millions of times before. The thing is, the visuals on this thing are so goddamn striking that, for me at least, it almost felt like I was watching a much more unique set of plotlines that was actually being told. Rather than trying to bring the Sin City graphic novel into movie "reel life", it seemed almost like this was more an exercise to bringing reel life into Sin City. That the actors weren't trying to portray comicbook characters as much as they were trying to intergrate their 3-D physicality into 2-D flat-figured Frank Miller drawings ( as was most evident with the make-up jobs on Marv & the Yellow Man). I know that there are some people who criticized the simplicity & graphic "pointlessness" of this movie, but it's art direction was so full of energy & depth ( for my visual senses, at least) that I couldn't keep my eyes off the screen & found myself truly embedded in the illusion that I was watching something original.
"Criticism is the laziest form of expression ." - some deep dude.

They just came out with the official RED BAND (that's right - R-rated!) trailer for the movie yesterday; I saw it over at Trailer Addict. It will BLOW YOUR MIND! It's by far the best trailer I've seen yet - and you get to hear Morgan Freeman use the F-word, which for some reason is unbearably cool. Here; I copied the link for you: Wanted Red Band TrailerSeriously, I have become crazy-excited for this movie lately; its now one of my most-anticipated movies of the summer. I can't wait to see it!

I've been excited since I saw the first Russian trailer online, which had that awesome shot with the guy getting a keyboard across the face, but not the stuff with the sniper rifle (which is pure CGI bliss). The first domestic trailer was decent - but it had nothing on this latest stuff; I'm stoked for this movie. It's not surprising to me that the Russians get the best trailers though, I suppose - the director is HUGE over there from the "Night Watch" series. He's like our version of Speilberg or something.

Good gravy, it's been busy in here! Geez, ya take the kids swimmin' for awhile... First off, TMC, I quite like your lists. I'm lovin' the shout out for "Ghost World" and we both have "Sin City" in number 1 spots! And thanks for the link MechaGodzilla! "Shoot this muthaf*cka!" WHOO-HOO! Now this is an action movie! I was already excited to see it (welcome to the party Turtles Run ), but now... 2 MORE WEEKS IS JUST TOO LONG TO WAIT!!!! "The Incredible Hulk" comes out today and I was supposed to go to the 11:00 show, but the wife had to be at work by 11! So, I'll be seeing it tomorrow morning at 11. I'm excited, but I do have problems with it and I haven't even seen it yet. One is the look of the Hulk, he doesn't even look like Edward Norton! That's what I loved about "Hulk", you could see Eric Bana's face even when he was the Hulk! He also doesn't look as good to me. Really, I liked the last version alot better. Typin' o' which, can I ask you guys a question? WHAT WAS WRONG WITH 2003's "HULK"? Seriously. I really wanna know! This movie was filled to the brim with established characters, emotion & drama with small sprinkles of ( COMPLETELY AWESOME) action. ( HE TOSSED THE LIVING CRAP OUTTA ONE TANK, TOOK ANOTHER APART, AND BEAT A THIRD INTO SUBMISSION! NOT TO MENTION THE CRAP WITH THE HELICOPTERS AND FIGHTER JETS! HE ALSO PUNCHED A DOG IN THE NUTS AFTER THE BASTARD BIT HIS! ) The end battle wasn't even a 20-minute fight (yet it ended in the MOST AWESOME way), so how could people really complain? Alotta folks bring up the CGI. I didn't think it was bad at all. It fit the way the Hulk has always appeared in my mind if he were to be real. He was filled with enough detail that he fit in with his surroundings, yet he also looked as if he didn't belong. I don't see that as a bad thing at all. It's kinda poetic, really. (Just think about it.) And, as I mentioned before, he looked like a big, green Eric Bana. If I were Ed, I'd be pissed that he didn't look like me. What's the point of playin' Bruce if the Hulk doesn't even look like you? Others bring up the lack of action. Okay. But what about the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, the last 2 "Matrix" films, "Transformers" or any other Michael Bay-typa film? These are completely trashed for being all action and no brain. Here, we have alotta brain with a little (yet COMPLETELY AWESOME) action and folks are STILL complaining? While I disliked their choice of villain (it shoulda been the REAL Absorbing Man), the way he was defeated was fantastic: killed by the Hulk's rage. Not a beating, but focused rage directed straight into his father's being! That so reminds me of an episode of the 'toon when the Leader finally stole the Hulk's power, but he couldn't control the rage and he destroyed his lab & nearly himself! Only Brue an control the power of the HULK! And what about all of the emotion put into this movie? There were several moments when I really felt for these charcters! Especially there at the end when Bruce has a quick memory flash of his father giving him a kiss goodnight when he was a child. It showed he didn't only remember David Banner as this insane person, but as a father whom he once loved and who also loved him. Not to mention the way this movie was filmed! The whole comic-book-look made this the most visually interesting movie I've ever seen! (It's only matched by "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow". A personal fave when it comes to eye candy. The scene in the theater with "The Wizard of Oz" playing in the background is so beautiful that my eyes nearly melted from their sockets!) From the lettering in the credits to the way it showed a scene from several different angles at once (even phone conversations were set up better than the usual split screen), my eyes enjoyed every minute of it and I only wish it woulda done this more often! I was happy with everyone's performance and I'm disappointed that none of them will be in the new movie. I guess you could say that it was an awful adaption because the comics have tons of "Hulking out" & action, but they went "intelligent" with it and were somehow booed outta the theater. I don't get it. Really, I'm usually the one complaining about the lack of action and boring scenes, but I was never bored with this movie! So what's the big deal? What makes this one of the worst comic adaptions ever made? By the way, for those of you that are going to see "The Incredible Hulk" before I do, STAY AFTER THE CREDITS! There's bound to be sumpthin' there since there was on "Iron Man"! There's supposed to be a "Captain America"/I] connection somewhere in this mvie as well! Has anyone else spotted his sheild in [I]"Iron Man"? (It's on a table behind Stark when he's busted changing out of his suit by Pepper.) YOU'VE BEEN WARNED! So I don't wanna read alotta whinin' about how I didn't warn you guys. A little bit of comic movie "news" for ya (it's been awhile), Wolverine storms Normandy! Yes, it is true! I'm really hoping for a series of flashbacks that go from his being sick all the time as a child to the first time he popped his claws on the man who murdered his father to his stint in WWII to his time in Japan! The images in "Origin" are beautiful. Wouldn't it be fantastic to see this on the big screen?! It seems Marvel is ruining their relationship with Favreau. First, they announced a release date for the sequel without consulting him. Then they offered him just $1 million more to make the sequel (he only got $4 mil for the first) and now it seems he may not be directing it at all! Good gravy! It's funny that Marvel is pulling this crap. They developed their own production company because they were shafted on "SpiderMan". It's made BILLIONS, yet they only received $10 million... AND IT WAS THEIR CHARACTER! I guess that's what ya call ironic. That's all for now, catch ya later!

Well, I just got back from seeing "The Incredible Hulk"... and my worst fears had been realized! They completely ruined the crap outta him! First, they screwed up his origin, making it more like the show and taking away the selfless heroism of Bruce saving someone else! (I really hate that they decided to depend so much on the television show for inspiration. The opening credits were basically the opening to the show! I even heard the closing piano theme play at one point!) Then they had it so his HEARTRATE was the trigger for his transformation! WHAT? That was the stupidest thing I'd ever heard! Second, the Hulk didn't seem all that pissed. Sure, there were a few times when he'd let out a scream in anger or just looked a tad pissed, but there were very few moments where you saw NUTHIN' BUT RAGE emanate from his being. The Hulk is supposed to be a creature of PURE RAGE! The angrier he gets, the stronger he becomes, but he just didn't seem to get all that angry to me. Not as much as he should have, anyway. Especially when he was able to look stupid every so often. Since when does the Hulk look stupid?! Since when is the Hulk dazed?! He also used weapons! Since when does the Hulk need a sheild or hand weapons to fight someone? I've only really seen him use his hands in a fight. He's supposed to be mad with rage! He's not thinkin' about a weapon or a sheild, he's thinkin' about putting his FISTS through whatever is pissing him off! Oh, and his look doesn't hold up very well. He's got too much detail in his skin! He actually looks dirty! And no, he looks nothing like Edward Norton, which is just plain dumb. I dunno. I guess I just expected them to keep more of what I loved about the character since Marvel was helming the project. The movie did have its moments though. The action wasn't too bad, but there wasn't really more of it, like they kept saying. In fact, I think the action in the first movie was MUCH BETTER. You guys remember that clip I showed ya? It turns out that the reason Blonsky can hop around the way he did was because they had given him a low dose of the Super Soldier serum beforehand. (So they weren't really "going all Matrix" on us afterall.) I figured that's what they did, but you never can tell what Hollywood is thinkin', ya know? A coupla spoilers that take place at the end (just in case you're curious): We see the birth of another Hulk villain when the Abomination finally makes his appearance (he doesn't fully change until close to the end). If you know the name of the character (I didn't), you'll know EXACTLY who he's going to become. (I did figure out who he was once I saw the start of his transformation though! ) We also got the scene with Stark talking with Ross in a bar. (It's another Avengers connection.) This actually takes place BEFORE the credits, leaving nothing after them (so Corey & I wasted 6 minutes of our lives). If you loved "Hulk", you'll probably HATE this one. Well, hate might be too strong a word because I didn't hate it. I just didn't enjoy it as much. With the way some people complained about the seriousness of the '03 version, you'da thought that they mighta went a tad light-hearted, like they did with "Iron Man", but no, they didn't. It's just as serious, if not MORE SERIOUS than the last one! I actually had MORE FUN watching the more hated "too serious" version! I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with high hopes for this movie. Go in with a clean slate on EVERYTHNG you've ever known about the Hulk and you just might enjoy yourself. (Kinda sad to have to do that when Marvel is the production company.) I hope they do better with the sequel, but I doubt they can. Not if they continue with the continuity of this one. They shoulda just gave us a direct sequel to the last one. (It seems they mighta tried because Bruce is down in South America at the beginning of this one, which is where he was at the end of the last.) By the way, it had a teaser trailer for "The Spirit" and they had changed the date to December 2008. So, yeah, it's comin' this year!

Sorry 'bout the delay between updates, but I've been kinda busy with the kids and I was wanting to see "Wanted". However, it doesn't look too likely. "Hellboy II" came out today and the wife is wantin' to take the kids to see "Journey to the Center of the Earth". (Not that I don't wanna see "Journey". I've NEVER sat through a 3-D motion picture and I've always wanted to, but... I WANNA SEE A CBM, dagnabit!) I wanna see "Hellboy" more than I wanna see "Wanted" and then "The Dark Knight" comes out next Friday, putting "Wanted" even further on down the list of "must see" flicks. I did see "Hancock" on July 4th and it wasn't too shabby at all! Sure. It had it's problems here and there, but if you're going for a good time, you should have one. The action was definetly there! In actual CBM "news", "The Incredible Hulk" looks as if it's not gonna make much more than the last movie did. Alotta blame is being thrown in the direction of Ang Lee, which I don't think is fair at all. If this one was "so much better", why aren't people seeing it more than once or telling friends? What's really strange is that even though it hasn't made much more than the last, it's being considered a successfull reboot. Really? The last movie wasn't really a box office failure. So I never understood why they kept saying it was, but when this movie doesn't do much better they still call it "better than the last"? Nevertheless, they're talkin' about doin' another reboot. Actually they were talkin' reboot only days after it came out, so this isn't because of the B.O. numbers. Another reason I've read is that people still want a "flesh & blood" Hulk. I'd love to meet these people... SO I CAN SMACK SOME SENSE INTO 'EM! A flesh & blood actor in a hulk suit? What a crock! Here's the box office numbers for each movie: "Hulk" "The Incredible Hulk"In the final weeks of The Dark Knight's viral campaign are coming to a close and the Joker just HAD to make a mess of things! He's vandalized EVERY "Dark Knight" webpage! You can check out the progression of each site as it was updated up until the 10th over here. I've also found out that they are going to be playing the movie at at 3 & 6am on opening day to meet demand in some cities. That's one heck of a demand! Check out the "Hellboy II" promos! I LOVE the 'Inside the Actor's Studio' ones!

I saw Hancock last night, and it was alright. I was a little disappointed with the twist they threw in half way through the film, I kind of liked the idea that he was the only one, and it was unexplained. The Dark Knight looks fucking brilliant, I can’t wait.

Well... I already knew Charlize Theron was at least going to end up superpowered because the trailers showed him fighting someone with long blonde hair and then you had that sinister shot of her with those sunglasses. However, I must admit, the whole "we've been here for thousands of years and I'm your wife" thing wasn't something that had me too thrilled. I was really hoping for a real supervillain. Instead we got a crappy human one, but as I said: THE ACTION WAS DEFINETLY THERE! quote: The Dark Knight looks fucking brilliant, I can’t wait.
Doesn't it? I was a tad nervous about their reimagining of the Joker, but the more I see of him, the more I likes him! This is a DEFINET must see for me! Here's the "final" trailer. You see Bats beat the tar out of the Joker in what appears to be an interrogation room and a quick over-the-shoulder shot of Two-Face talking with someone who thought he was dead. I used quotation marks because this was actually the first trailer, but it was only seen at a comic convention. Ahhhhhh, the comic convention. I've only been to ONE my entire life and it was too awesome for words! The had Lou Ferigno and more comics and comic-related merchandise than the eye could see! I just had no idea porn was such a HUGE deal for these guys. They had playmates walkin' around and entire booths commited to XXX. I guess comic conventions aren't just for kids!

What do ya know? I gotta go see "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" today! Oh, man, where do I start? First off, they pretty much threw the comics out the window on this one... and it was STILL fantastic! This movie was leaps & bounds better than the first- AND I LOVED THE FIRST! They went ALL fantasy! They had elves, tooth fairies, trolls- it was great! Oh, and the action! The action was all there and in BIG DOSES! They start off by giving us a tiny paragragh about how they found Hellboy and then they tell the story of the Golden Army through Prof. Broom telling a young Hellboy a bedtime story. (Very sweet.) We then fast forward to present times and find that Hellboy has actually been LETTING himself get captured on film! (Seems he's tired of working without recognition.) This is when the new guy, Johann Krauss, comes in and he was very cool. He's a disembodied spirit contained within a suit and he speaks with a German accent. He was actually pretty darn funny and a great addition to the team as their new "leader" who's job it is to keep Hellboy in line! This story also lets us get to know Abe a bit more. I say they "threw the comics out the window" because of a few developments that happen that could've NEVER happened in the comics. They aren't bad things. In fact, they expand more on the changes they made in the first movie to flesh out the relationships between Abe, Hellboy and Liz. I can't wait for the next installment to see where these characters are going because I have NO CLUE what the next one could be about because the end of this one just comes completely outta left field! It really makes ya wonder where it is they could possibly go with the next one (pretty much anywhere)! (You'll find out what I mean when you go see it. ) AHIGHLY RECOMMENDED!Oh yeah! I forgot to tell you guys that Jon Favreau WILL be back for "Iron Man II"! He better be, dagnabit!

I was tempted to start a HellBoy thread but decided I'm to lazy and just respond to your use of this thread for the movie. It must be really subjectively personal, but both my wife and I just didn't get into this movie. I feel you'll not believe me, but I actually fell asleep towards the end of the movie. I found the movie boring and I wasn't at all interested in the characters - they all seemed so contrived (maybe that's what comic book characters are supposed to be). I was turned off by the macho stuff (I had thought the American public had moved beyond this stuff). For me this is a move backwards in superhero cinema. It's not what I am looking forward to in the future. I found The Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) more entertaining for summer fun.

Yeah, I understand what you're sayin'. What Mignola wanted to do was create a guy who fought monsters so much that it was more routine than anything else. He modeled his behavior after his father's, who was a blue collar worker. His father did the most dangerous things on the job and acted like it was nuthin' and he thought that would be a great personality for Hellboy! They kept the attitudes of the characters exactly the way they are in the comics, so I am really happy with the final picture. I think that's why I seem to enjoy these movies more than most. I know what to expect. quote: I found The Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) more entertaining for summer fun.
This is one I'm definetly seeing with the kids! quote: Oroginally posted by Kulturtrager: I was pretty lukewarm on the first one.
I'm not sure what you didn't enjoy about the first, but if it was a lack of imagination, then you CAN'T be disappointed with this one! "Hellboy" was a movie I enjoyed the more I watched it. It's definetly a smaller film when you compare the two. So, I suggest you check out the sequel. The second is more del Toro's style than Mignola's and you gotta admit, del Toro has a wonderful eye for the beautifully weird.

Sure, I might offend a few of the blue-noses with my cocky stride and musky odor - oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called 'City Fathers' who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about what's to be done with this Monkey_Boy?!"

Y'know, I think I just don't ever quite get into origin movies. Too much time with boring orientation. I much prefer sequels, so I reckon I'll be fully on board with this pure story and action free of 'who the hell is this Hellboy and how did he come to be? type questions. '

Your comment is one of the most insightful ones I've read in a long time. It explains and defines your whole perspective on enjoying Hellboy and it is really revealing, more so than most comments posted on this website. It even helps me to understand why I didn't enjoy the movie as much. Since I can't relate to this movie as a product of its comic-book origins, I'm trying to experience something without having an ability appreciate the adaptation effort that went into the movie. I guess it's like trying to enjoy tennis if one never played tennis. But if you have experience the competition of the game as a player than something more can be experienced as a spectator. Thanks for helping to understand the valuable connection here.
