I've always liked Vietnam war films the best. "Apocalypse Now" is my all time favorite (the Redux version in particular). It is just one of those movies that creates its own world. You can imagine being on that boat. The things you see and do along the way change the way you see that world. So much so that by the end of the line you actually feel what Marlon Brando so masterfully depicts on screen. No other war film has ever had the same effect on me.

It's been a while since anyone posted on this topic so no one may read this, but as far as war movies go, The Great Escape counts, why because it was set during a war in a country at the heart of the war. Other good war movies: Band of Brothers The Thin Red Line Das Boot Patton Glory Apocalypse Now

Two that come to mind immediately are The Thin Red Line and Apocalypse Now. I think the ethereal, internal nature of both films adds a dimension that is missing in more in-your-face war movies.
----------------------- It's been emotional.

i cant believe nobody has mentioned "reach for the sky". i find it the most fascinating war story of all time, to think in the late 30's/early 40's that a man could lose both legs and continue to become a high ranking fighter pilot is incredible. perhaps a classy big budget re-make is in order?

Huh? Really?
Yeah I know. Half the movie wasn't even about war...I'm willing on reflection to suspend this movie from my list. Atonement really was a drama that used war as a backdrop, though there is a panning war scene that I've heard from others was rather remarkable.
