I'll try to bite my tongue and not get into too many personal favorites so that somebody else can share. Swashbucklers is a catch-all phrase which usually includes some period films where there are swordfights. They can be pirate movies, Zorro-type films, samurai epics, and several films based on classic novels.
For example, "The Three Musketeers" is a classic swashbuckler novel and has been turned into more than one good film. Many younger viewers have seen "The Mask of Zorro" with Antonio Banderas, and I believe that's probably the best swashbuckler of this generation. Then again, a case could be made that "Star Wars" is a swashbuckler, since it has a few light-sabre fights.
OK, are we on the same page? Basically, swashbucklers have plenty of action (using swords at least partially) and they have to include romance between a hero and a spunky member of the opposite sex, who almost always "hate each other at first sight."
Anybody have something to add? My tongue is starting to hurt from holding back.
