Hello, i know the logical core of this question is nonsense, but for practical purposes, At wich stage of songwriting is the no point of no return from Pop when producing an electronica piece?

Any comment on this will be a great help.

ok lets say you write a song in your guitar, so it's got that structure favoured by the placement of notes and chords in the guitar fretboard, and once recoded and produced the guys in the rock/pop category say it's not rock or pop, it dance or electronica, and the guys in the electronica category say it's actually pop. all i want to know is when the electrinica listeners stop thinking of a song involving pop structures and house beats, arpegiators, guitars and lyrics as electrnica because it sound too "pop"

what is pop anyways?

all pop stands for is pop-ular music.
wich really could encompass any and all styles and genres.

so i guess i still dont see what you are trying to ask.

Technically, "pop" is anything that isn't classical, jazz or world music. Electronica is just a sub-category of pop.

So yeah.

since the first post i said the i knew the question was nonsensical if it were to be semanticallly parsed, so i was asking anyway AS IF it wasn't.

and even if it were a subcategory it still has to have unique propertices not shared by other memebers of the case, or else there would be subcategories that only differ among themselves by how they are named.

i was just asking when you hear a song in an supposed all-electronica compilation and think "What's this shit?" or something like that.

i would like to help out, but still dont know exactly what you are looking for?I think it is how you are trying to explain it that is confusing?

I really dont think the average electronic based producer actually takes styles and genres into what they are making.I know when i sit down and make music that I am just basically noodling with samples and various sequencing ideas until i find something i like.Sometimes it ends up housey or hip-hopish.It just depends.

Now if you are making a mix then genres and styles are usually important. You dont want to be all over the place...or maybe you do.It seems as if nowadays that having a diverse mix is popular.Personally i like a tight mix that does not stray too far from the middle.

When i am listening to an album or whatever, i really dont sit and think about genres and if this should fit here, and why?I just listen.I try not to think too hard about it, cause that usually takes away from the listening experience.

I dont know if your answer is in there, but i tried.

i know what you mean Imprezu21, i don't really care about genres when composing/producing/mixing, but i had to ask my nonsense question since i had 2 of my finished songs recalled from a compilations of local electronica because the guy(s) in charge said it was actually pop. I don't know what kind of criteria they use since i didn't care to ask because i know they are wrong. i played them with a live band opening for plankton man and bostich from nortec collective in Tijuana and the people responded pretty well, being that i was the "crappy opening act"

ahhh...well, i am sure you will find your niche.
It had to be pretty cool opening for those guys from nortec collective?I have heard alot of good things coming from down there.

How was plankton man and bostich?
Was there a good vibe going, what kind of stuff did they play?

I am sure they are hugely popular down there right?

It was really cool, they are using lots of live intruments along with samples, and are playing mostly new stuff, from the upcoming lp.

nortec is a complete artistic movemente involving music, clothes, graphic design. Is in fact a byproduct of the culture clash experienced by the people who live in the border who seeked to preserve their native roots but were unable to withstand the asimilation of the northern memes. some would say Tijuana is nortec.

It's weird but i actually meet bostich about 10 ago since he was a dentist practising just 2 blocks from where i lived.

Pop encroaches on every music genre because something from that genre crosses over to the mainstream due to intense popularity, but I wouldn't put Electronic music as a sub-genre of Pop.

Interesting thread. Love the sound of nortec. I'm a graphic designer by day and I love how the industry tends to crossover with experimental sides of music, fashion, etc and how they all seem to influence each other. With the original question, I might be off track here but I think often 'pop' refers to the commercial side of music, and through out all genres its seems as sounds move from the fringe experimental edge to more familiar mainstream sounds they become associated as more 'pop' sounding because more people will buy the music. I think you'll find this for electronica, indie rock what ever. A more familiar sound that can be tied to a particular scene = more records sold.

It's funny though, from time to time you get freaked out... I remember hearing Mr Scruff on an Audi or BMW or something car ad and just about falling out of my chair. Anyone will try and cash in on creativity in the name of advertising. So while I essentially agree with Imprezu that pop shouldn't really mean anything bar what is popular... I think if someone said my music was sounding too 'pop' I would be insulted. As for perhaps wondering if there is a hard and fast line where a sound goes from being categorised as Britney Spears or Squarepusher.....nah I doubt it exists.
